Exclamation E39 540 Blower never stops

I have a 2000 540i Sport 6-speed with 93K miles. I have a new feature that has just appeared.

After I shut down the engine and take the key out, the blower motor for the HVAC continues running. I remember that it was supposed to continue running for a few minutes to disperse heat and can also be turned on via the "rest" feature. But no matter the setting of the rest button, the fan continues to blow for hours after the car is turned off. The fan will eventually turn off after several hours or when the battery runs down.

During this time, no air is coming out of the vents, but you can clearly hear the motor running. I have not pulled fuse 76 yet to see if this will stop the fan.

I have seen the Final Stage issue described in many places and there is fluctuation of the fan speed when the car is on, so I may have that problem as well, but I have not seen any reference to the fan continuing to run after shutdown.

Any help would be appreciated.
Frank

Hello
First: try to remuve fuse.
Second: test temperature sensor, they sometimes crazy.
Third: check wiring of fan.

Thanks Fergy.

On a whim I bought a new final stage resistor. I installed it last night and it seems to have resolved the issue. I only took a short drive to test it, but the blower motor immediately turned off when I turned off the key.

So I am hopefull that the final stage was the issue. We shall see.

Thanks,
Frank

I have the 2003 model year, and I have a similar problem. The #9 fuse continues to blow-out intermittently. This supports the aux fan (now replaced), the dash control panel for AC and heat (replaced) and the AC condenser. I figured it couldn't be the condenser as it blows with the AC off. Any ideas?
