Question Codes from an E28

I read how to get codes from an E30, but it doesn't seem to apply to the E28 with Motronic. My '86 535i won't idle after it gets splashed heavily from underneath, and thought reading the codes might help localize the problem. Ideas?

Ohm out both sensors on the belly according to Bentley.

even my 1988/11 E32 is not very responsive to codes, that was just the beginning of code reading.
For cars from these built years still a good multimeter and a wiring diagram is the best.
