1998 528i automatic transmission problem?
Hi, I just purchased a 98 528i with 160K miles on it. When I first drive it, it seemed fine. So, interestingly, whenever the car is cold, there does not appear to be a problem. However, when driving for a longer period of time, the problem appears. When stopping and then accelerating, the car stutters, and sometimes seems to miss the gear, thus leading me to suspect it is a transmission issue. It seems to get progressively worse the longer I drive it. Also when I brake to go through a curve and then accelerate, it seems to slip, and take 2-3 seconds before it gets into gear.
Does anyone have any idea? Could it be the transmission fluid? (ow, hope so, as anything else I cannot afford)... Thanks, Den |
I have been here before
When the transmission sits, the ATF collects in the pan, therefore there is adequate fluid for the pick-up. When the fluid is redistributed around the transmission, there is not enough fluid.
Warm the transmission to about 50 degrees C (by running the car) and remove the filler transmission filler plug. Fill the transmission with ATF until it starts to run out. Hopefully, that will do the trick. |
