2002 530i Transmission problem (?)

Hello everyone

I have a 2002 530i (orig owner) with 179k miles and a steptronic trans (A5S325Z). Recently I have encountered a strange issue that occurs at highway cruising speed. The trans seems to "pause" like it is going to downshift but then doesn't. It is an intermittent issue that occurs at highway speeds (75-80 mph) as long as I am not decelerating or accelerating. I have not noticed this at lower speeds either. The tranny was serviced at the dealer at 100k (let's not start another thread on this... ). The engine runs great, the trans works fine outside of this issue. No warning lights at all (but I will will connect up my laptop later to check).
Any ideas?

I'm stumped. By default I want to change the fluid and filter however I am a little concerned that it may be a bigger issue.

Thanks in Advanced.

DH

If you have 80K miles since last transmission fluid flush, I would do it again. Its easy to do with the car up on stands, and the engine needs to be running at operating temperature when you refill. Since the dealer probably never removed the pan when they did the 100k flush, you might want to remove the pan, clean it out (and the little magnets), and replace the filter. I had a lot of trouble with leaky pan gasket after I did it, but by using higher than recommended torque (10 vs 5 lb) and a bit of sealant I finally got it sealed back up.
Make sure you use the correct ATF. Pelican may have it, but if not, Bavarian Autosport has it. An e39-530 should take about 3.5 qts on a refill after drain.

Hello again,

It turns out that my torque converter was going out. The transmission kept dropping in and out of overdrive since I drive mostly freeway. I took my car to a reputable tranny shop that told me the TC was going out. After they cracked it open they found worn bands and black oil even thought I *changed* the fluid at 100k miles. So much for the lifetime oil. The mechanic said that it should be changed every 50k for now on. After a complete rebuild for $2300 (including a rebuilt TC) the car runs great. I am keeping the car for a while so the $2300 is not a big deal. I received an unlimited warranty on the trans for 30k miles.

Just wanted to follow-up with everyone in case someone out their experiences the same thing.
