Angry 97 528i transmission not shifting

I have a 97 528i and the transmission isn't shifting gears on its own. I can manually shift it. I have had several mechanics give me the run around saying its fixed only to realize it is not. Could this be caused by something as simple as low transmission fluid? How will I know it's low when I can't find the dipstick to even check it? I have also looked and it says I need green tag transmission fluid-What does that mean? Any help would be great.

Possibly low fluid...you might find good info in the owners manual that should be in the glove box. If not, buy a Bentley manual for a good reference. A parts shop can tell you about tranny fluid or a dealer(last resort they know but cost is usually more).
