1997 540I will not go in any gear but reverse , tran failsafe light on .. Just drove 400 miles ,parked car and this , no warning ...Any advise would be helpfull

Sorry - automatic transmission trouble lights and codes are just bad news all the time. There's really not much that you can do at this point but take it to someone who services or rebuilds transmissions. It may be easier to install a good used one, as it's also difficult to get good quality rebuilds sometimes.
