1994 E34 525TD Auto Problems

Hi
The auto in my 1994 E34 525TD has died and there are no specific parts for it in the country (New Zealand) except for those in othe only other one of these models here which is still running AFAIK.
If I replace the drive train cluster (as it was described to me by my auto serviceman) with one from a petrol 525 will that trigger the "limp home" mode, or is the trans ECU not advanced enough for that?
As I understand what he told me the engine would rev higher in 1st and 2nd and rev the same in 3rd and overdrive. The higher rpm in 1st and 2nd for any given speed might, I'm told, cause the computer to think there is a problem and switch to "limp home" mode.

regards and thanks
rolli
