is there any difference between the 528 engine(2.8L i6) and he 328 engine(2.6L i6)??????

a 1997 528i.....is there any difference in the 96-9? 328is......engine...another question.......i was planning to get 18" rims off my friend...and its a 5lug universal....but when i tryed to put the rim on....it seems like it did not fit....any sugestion?...and also i think i have a problem with my tranmission....its a 5speed....when i shift it into first gear it makes a lil "clunk" noise...it only happens in first gear.....i tryed to stepping on the clutch all the way to the metal....still makes a clunking noise...can someone help?...thanx

I do believe that these cars share the same engine in this particular year. There might be minor differences, but I believe that the internals are the same. Just like the 525 and the 325 shared the same engine in the early 90's.

The wheels must have the proper offset (spacing from the hub to the center of the tire), and also the correct bolt pattern. Just because it has five lugs doesn't mean that it will automatically fit on your car. Porsche rims will not fit on BMWs and vice-versa.

The clunking can be a variety of things, can you give me more details? Does it happen when coasting, or only at a stop. Does the sound come from the rear of the car, or from directly under the shift lever?

USually, BMW has used the dsame engines from the 3 Series in the 5 Series cars with almost no changes, of course this isnt always the case, however the E36 should have the same motor as the 5 Series from the same years. Usually, BMW's use a numbering system that indicates what is in the cars, for example,

328i means 3 Series, wth a 2.8L injected motor.

528i means 5 Series, wth a 2.8L injected motor.


As for the clucking noise, What is the fluid level in the tranny?

for the tranny level....im not sure....but i will check it tomorrow...and the clunking noise only happen when i let shift it into 1st gear at a stop position...and the it sounds like its coming from the rear....and also when i release the clutch...i tryed to release the clutch slowly...still it makes a clunk....if u can help thanx alot

Your clutch may not be releasing properly. Try this test:

- Start car in neutral
- Press down clutch
- Wait 15 seconds (count it).
- Shift into reverse.

If you hear a grinding noise, then your clutch is not releasing all the way. This is a common problem with the Porsches, but very uncommon with BMWs, because they have a hydraulic clutch setup. Reverse typically doesn't have synchros that will reduce grinding - hence the noise. First thru fifth all have synchros which will hide this problem...
