Problem Removing Trans Selector Switch
I am trying to remove the auto transmission selector switch to clean it in hopes it will clear up an intermittant "Trans Program" problem.
I can't figure out how to remove the front screw from the switch. The locking lever for the "key off or out" feature sits on top of the screw but i don't see the obvious way to remove the lever. I can get a ball end allen wrench into the switch hold down screw, but can only get the screw half out when it hits the lever. Someone must have run into this. Please help. Heres's a link to a picture of what I'm talking about. http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=viewall&albumID=59942237 |
The link isn't working, i dunno if its my computer. If i saw a pic i might be able to give some suggestions.

Transmission Selector switch removal
Sorry i can't get that link working.
Here it is. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Trans_Sel.jpg The lever to the left of the yellow switch is my problem. It won't allow the screw under it to come out and i can't figure out how to remove the lever. |
Maybe go for the source. See that gold colored bolt that seems to be holding that lever in? Maybe loosen that to loosen the lever istelf. I have a manual trani so i don't have anything to look at up close. Maybe that will do the trick?

Agreed - the switch isn't going to come off without that lever out?

That's my problem. I can't get the bolt out. The gold square nut will not turn as the piece that holds the shaft is flat under the nut. You can see the ledge under the nut in the picture . The other side has nothing to get a wrench or screwdriver on. I do not want to force the nut and end up breaking something.

Hmm, they must have gotten that on there somehow :).
Is it a press-fit? The yellow switch is blocking the removal of the lever, what is the lever attached to on the other end? -Wayne |
I agree, this must be a press fit. I am just nervous about forcing it out without something that says its pressed in. I looked in the ETK and it shows the actuating cable but no detail on the lever.
The front side of the lever goes down about an inch and the cable attaches to it. I have removed the cable (its the black cable with metal end that you see just in front of the yellow selector switch. So i think i will have to try pressing it out and hope i don't break anything. If i ever get it out i'll post a procedure with pics. Thanks for the help. |
Does the ETK show each of those parts as replaceable? If so, then hack at it. If not - then leave it alone, as you might have to replace the entire assembly if you break it!

I'll look in the ETK as well. Is it possible that this switch cannot be accessed from outside the transmission?
