How do I replace rear window defrost switch?

I own an '88 528e. The rear window defrost switch exploded the other day (i.e., i pushed the switch in and when it popped out, the front of the switch blew off). I ran down to the dealer and grabbed the part. Now I can't figure out how to get the old one out. It is located under the hazard switch just to the right of the on board computer. Can someone tell me how to remove the old switch. (I know there are a couple of spring devices, one on each side of the switch that you pinch together to remove, but how do you get to it, to pinch the springs together?) Does the entire unit that holds the computer and both switches come out? Do I go in under the dash through the driver side foot well to gain access to just the switch? I don't want to get to "strong" with trying to force it out and break the entire unit as it does not seem to be very solid.

Help....

Thanks in advance!

The Bentleys manual says to gently pry the switch out with a small screwdriver.
You do not need to remove anything else.

Bob,
Wanted to update that it worked! I used a butter knife and gently pried the entire housing out. That allowed access to squeeze together the two side springs and out she came. The replacement took a total of 5 min. Thanks again for your input and help!

Jim
