840 Brake Loss

Folks,
I discovered a leak in my brake system yesterday, and was looking for an opinion.

Initially sprung a leak from the pressure valve which sits close to the top of the brake fluid reservoir. This mean I get about a drop a minute from that valve falling on the reservoir.

After getting a low brake level warning, and topping it up , I have progressively lost all brake travel (pedal goes to the floor).

Can anyone tell me if it is a simple job of changing that valve...?

More importantly , easy to fix if competent?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Nik - '94 840Ci RHD

Update and Thanks

Marty,

thanks for the moral support in getting me to complete the repair.

I did investigate further, and turns out the one leak is the valve itself, and there is a second leak which is blatantly the brake master tank leaking every time I fill it up.

Las time I took it to the BMW folks they changed the brake master cylinder (8 months ago) and it is leaking from the seals....

Might grab two seals for the brake master as otherwise no way I can keep the fluid in.

As I am in the UK, I will prolly have to go to the local BM store, but am confident I can tackle it...

ever y had the brake master tank leak like that...? It is NOT from acuumulator or the like.

Cheers again - appreciated,

nik

I know...

Marty,

I cannot believe it either - the fluid doesnt even keep the fluid over 2 seconds (engine off , no pedal depression etc...).

Still the idea of flushing the system not only great, but not sure I can complete due to lack of facilities...

Will do some readin on the H31 again, and figners crossed! I just need to pinpoint the leak - perhaps finding an implement to make sure the seals are the leakers!

Hehe the English car lingo yeah, is quite different, snazzy when you know both and funny to compare.

Last time the leaks sealed.. and took it to Bee Em they said ' the seals come in a set with the break master cylinder seriously... they think I am a mug?

Never mind - will keep u posted,

thanks again,
nik

And the conclusion

Folks,

this is the conclusion of the story:

I ordered the parts to complete the repair myself , and on the Monday at work they announced this
partnership with Sytner BMW - a big dealership company here.

Did the right thing and emailed (dodgyname@bigbank.com - I guess looked
important) my complaint to customer services, and within the hour I had a
person from the dealership on the phone. They arranged a two no questions
asked - even the tow man was surprised as to how that happened, and the car
went in

I received a call to say that they needed to order the parts:
- Oh yeah, which ones that mate?
- Er, the rubber grommets that the tank clicks on to, they are torn.
- Oh really?
- Tell you what - you go to the parts department, there is set waiting for
you.

I asked him if they spotted the H31 leak. ' The what? er, no Sir, we didnt
see anything.

OK son, never mind.

It just goes to show how well it pays being clued up - picked teh car up this morning, and she drives - and brakes like a dream.

Thanks to Marty for the support and the invaluable tips!

Cheers,
nik
