Tach/Speedometer/Sunroof

Hello, my son has issues with his 1984 633 CSI. The tachometer was not working, but now it works erratically. Here is the kicker. When the tachometer works, his power sunroof does not. When his sunroof works, the tachometer does not. What is the connection. I think it is a ground, but where do we start and how are the 2 connected?
Also, his speedometer does not work. We replaced the sensor in the rear differential, but still does work.
How can we test this? Can we put a ground or positive etc. at the sensor plug to test the gauge? His old car was a chevy and we would spin the cable with a drill to test the gauge. This is electronic and has no cable. How do we test the gauge?
I am going to test for continuity in the wires from the sensor to the back of the gauge. Do the wires go through the computer at some point or straight from sensor to the gauge? In other words I want to make sure the wires are good all the way from rear to the gauge, but can I or how do I test this?
Thanks!

BMW Roundel Bmw

Hi John, on your other post about the car running rough, have you checked to make sure that you do not have an intake manifold leaking? On this post, I am not sure about the 6 series cars, I have an E32 750iL V12, a lot of differences. Drop me a PM and I might be able to get you more info on this. Good luck!! Tony.
