What are signs the differential is going bad?

I have a 1990 BMW 735i that has a "hum" at 30-35 mph. I had replaced the complete driveshaft assembly last year so I don't believe it is the center bearing. I took the car to a transmission specialist to drive and he feels it is the differential that is moaning. I know this car was previously driven with "spirited" take-offs. Anyone concur a diff going bad could make this low hum? Thanks! Corey
