97 740I Brake lights not working

A friend of mine had a bulb out in the brake lights of his 740i. He replaced the bulb and all was fine. Then he sprayed a anti battery corrosion spray all over the bulbs and connections. Apparently this was suggest to him by some girl working at Auto Zone. Well now he has no brake lights at all.
Could he have shorted something out? What should he check first?

Check fuse first. If not bad pull light assembly and clean (wipe dry) the contacts as well as check the ground connection for the assembly.
