I have a 97 740il and the driver's articulated upper backrest moves very slowly and makes a grinding sound. Any idea what's going on?

These things seem to break over the years. I suspect that one or more of the small plastic gears inside are beginning to fail. My best recommendation is to ignore it, or replace it with a used one from a wrecking yard or eBay.
