Buy 840ci, comments

Greetings

I'm impressed with the 840ci, it's gorgeous

The issue is the mechanic's shop diagnostic computer costs, the reliability of the car, and me being able to fix it.

The 840 came in 8 & 12 cylinders. I'm leaning to the 8

When properly operational is the car able to drive around the US for 10-15k miles without falling apart, in general?

The 8 cylinder came in 4 liter and upgraded to 4.4 liter with only a small hp increase. The hp is around 290 hp. Does this engine provide enough torque to be a strong city street driving car and able to compete with a Honda Accord? I get the impression that it's a pig due to car weight of around 4,000#. That's ok as it's not replacing my 911 for entertainment. I'm looking for a daily driver that the bride could use.

Were some model years more reliable than others?

The multiplex control system is far from a simple system. Does the system have any history of the harnesses breaking down and needing replacement? Or any other issues that could drive me nuts. I've never worked on a multiplex car but am not intimidated by it and willing to jump into a new system. I'm pretty good at fixing things and always jump into difficult situations which usually have a happy ending.

It seems the retail $ of this car crashes after 100k miles? My bro said that on the used market anyone who could afford to pay for the mechanic's up keep could buy a new BMW

I plan on servicing and fixing anything that ever goes wrong on this car. Besides the cost of parts and buying a diagnostic computer and scope is there anything I should be informed of? My mechanic friend has been a lot of help and his impressions are always spot on so I'm not completely lost. In general it seems like I should find another BMW to buy instead of the 840ci? Pelicanheads always have info to offer so I'm in the discovery phase now. I really like the car and it's not often when this happens. My 911 has been completey personalized and I've been into every nut, bolt and wire on it and happy with the results.

I'm in no hurry to buy this now. I buy a car and keep it forever so I'm trying to get my ducks in a row so I know what I'm jumping into. Unfortunately there are not a lot of these cars around to just ask an owner.

It seems like spending $10-20k for a for a high end sport BMW street car is something I want to get into. It's big enough for the bride to go shoping in and sporty enough for me.. I think

otherwise it's one beautiful 2 door car

thx
