e24 m6 - MPG dial standard?

Ok, who's the local BMW tech spec historian here?

I am wondering if ALL e24 m6's came with the mpg gauge (bottom of the RPM dial) on the cluster or if that was an option - or only available on certain year cars or import markets? My dad had an '87 635CSI that had it. But I've come across a car that lacks it. Could that be an indicator of a fiddled with car/cluster? Or is that a legit OE configuration?

The M6 does not have the mpg gauge, instead it has an //M marking where the mpg gauge is on "lesser" e24s.
Most of us M6/M635 folks drive to make it always read less than 4 mpg anyway.
