2000 M5 - Excellent Condition - 16,9000
I am a Porsche / BMW enthusiast and take good care of my cars. Please feel free to search on my screen name for past history. The E39 M5 is truly a unique and awesome car. The performance is on par with the current M5, with a true 6 speed manual transmission as opposed to the SMG automatic which is the only current M5 option. This car is an amazing value at the current prices (unfortunately for me) and should easily run for another few hundred thousand miles with proper care.
Rotors and pads are in good shape - new at around 65K and has not been driven hard since then. Tires and rims are nearly new. I also have a full size new spare tire on a new matching rim. I have a complete records history for the car - nothing exciting there, except the new shocks, which is a good thing. I would encourage the next owner to take me up on the Powerchip programming (see below) as that really is the best and safest modification for this car. I also have a new clutch kit that I bought a few years back anticipating that at some point the clutch would go - but it still feels fine at 95K. I have the Bentley E39 5 Series service manuals as well. The MAF sensors were also recently replaced (something that pretty much has to be done at some point on all of the M5s). The car has just been smogged and registered for the next 12 months. I have lowered the price to $21,500 and thrown in quite a bit of extra value with the clutch kit, the spare rim and tire, the Bentley Manual, etc. Heck, I even have 3 quarts of the spendy 10W-60 oil these cars like that will go with the car - a $37.50 value as ordered from our host.

Hello,
It sounds like you have a pretty awesome car. I have a question. You stated it was almost up to the performance of the current M5's. I was under the impression that the new M5's have a V10 with 500hp. Is that correct. Is your engine stock? Thanks, Mike |

Hi Mike - the car is stock - other than the new shocks. These cars were 400 HP V8s, as opposed to the 500 HP V10s in the new cars. The new M5s are heavier, though, and really didn't gain much performance-wise. Just about every person I have spoken to who went from the E39 M5 to the E60 M5, preferred the E39 car. I think the E60 might be a few tenths of a second faster 0-60 (IIRC, the E39 is just under 5 seconds and the E60 is around 4.5). I think the biggest advantage of the E39 is the sweet 6 speed gearbox. All the E60 M5s use the SMG transmission.
I am open to any reasonable offers. These cars are a bargain right now.

Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I am new to BMW's and currently own a 2005 545i. I have been really interested in an M5 and there are things I don't know. Thanks again and I may very well be back in touch with you regarding your M5. Take care, Mike |

Hey Mike - the one modification to these cars that I think everyone who has tried it agrees upon is the Powerchip programming. It doesn't really add much in the way of overall HP and Torque (maybe 5-10 more of each total), but it really improves the drivability of the car - and seems to improve gas mileage a bit as well. We had this programming on the car for a few years and loved it - until there was a BMW recall for all M5s regarding something to do with the factory programming and emissions. In California, we could not renew our registration unless we took the car to BMW for new programming (this was the case for all E39 M5s covered by the recall). The new programming wiped out the Powerchip upgrade. Powerchip has agreed to reinstall it for me for $500 (less than half price), but I figured I would wait to see if the new owner was interested.

Thanks - haven't gotten any real interest yet, but haven't been trying very hard either (I am currently in Hawaii on vacation, so this is low priority). It does seem like the M5s are being lumped into the used SUV / large luxury car gas guzzler group right now and are taking a while to move. This car gets maybe 17 - 25 MPG depending on how it is driven, so it does much better than the standard gas guzzler - and is much more pleasurable to drive.

Atilla - I would love another 911 Cab - I still miss my 993 C4 cab I sold years back. But I am trying to go in the other direction and reduce the number of cars I have. With a new daughter I just don't have the time for the cars anymore.
By the way, I have reduced the asking price to $19,900.
