replace o rings in coolant hoses?

Hey guys,
I'm trying to fix a leak coming off my radiator. The hose seems to be in just fine shape and there is water coming from the fitting where one of the smaller hoses meets the radiator down near the drain plug. I have tried replacing the o ring and the one that is the correct size (according to matching it up with the one that came out of there) will just not go back in to the damn thing. It leads me to believe this isnt something guys do usually? Or is there a trick I should learn? Like to maybe just replace the whole hose to the tune of some 170 bucks that the dealer quoted me... I like the 25 cent version but I've worked at this for hours now. I am posting this generically speaking but for what its worth, its on an 04 x5 with a 4.4. Thanks my brothers!
