BMW Roundel 325 ix problems...need advice please

My wife has an '89 325 ix with 192k miles on it. As you can imagine, it has some issues and parts are starting to break on it. I just spent $600 bucks on a new Airflow unit, and had hoped that that part would get rid of my problem...... it didn't.

Here's the problem....

When I push on the excelerator, the car wants to die. I smell gas, and sometimes it does die, and it is a pain to get is started again. It drives fine when the car is in motion, with plenty of power. I have noticed that the RPM guadge shows it sitting at way down at 600 when I am at a stop, and forget about turning on the A/C, that kills it everytime. It also has a flat spot when it idles, like it's missing a stroke.

I am not just going to throw parts at it until I eventually find (by accedent) the root of the problem. I just can't afford it. Please, someone tell me if you have had a similar experiance, or any sugestion as to what it sounds like. I have my ideas, but I want an uninfluanced answer.

Thanks for reading
