They call me the Wanderer
I've been a poster on the R1100S site for several years and am looking to upgrade to a newer model. I went to BMW Daytona on Friday and tested a K1200S. I experienced a very disconcerting "wander" or "front-end hunt" when trying to hold a consistent speed under 50 or 60 mph. Salesman said that there was a steering damper fix that they could add based upon experience with other customers. Have any of you experienced similar tendencies?

Steering Damper?
Mine is much better now with 4400 miles on it. Maybe the damper needed to break in? Sounds stupid but i don't feel it anymore.

My K1200R did this when new, but it disappeared after 1,000 miles. I too feel the steering damper was breaking in.

Has anyone tried an after market steering damper yet? I have an Ohlins I can adapt but wonder it is worth the effort?

That's what BMW Daytona recommended........an aftermarket Ohlins adjustable damper.

Wierd, I rode a K1200S and R and never felt this wandering effect at all.

The steering on the K is more sensitive than my old R1100S.
For the first 100 km I experienced "wandering". Then I tried easing off my hand pressure on the bars. I thought I was pretty good at riding with a relaxed grip on my 2001 R1100S. But the K1200S is so much more responsive and requires less input on the bars. I quickly found releasing hand pressure on the bars cures any "Wandering". Try it. Load hand pressure on the bars. Its very difficult to not wander. Then ease up and feel the difference. Amazing! |
