Help with periodic starting issue

Hi,
Just got back from a 2k trip where bike (04 R1100S BCR - 30k) had periodic starting problems. Occasionally when I hit the starter, it would act like a dead battery - very slow to crank (and would even stop cranking). Turn key off and back on and it would fire up as normal. It did this off and on during the trip with no rhyme or reason to the symptom. Bike could be cold or hot, wet or dry (and it was a pretty wet trip on some daysJ. Got home and checked the battery. 13.1 V no load, 12 V under load for over 30 seconds. Any ideas from the collective would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It seems you may have a starter issue. Replace or repair. I am unsure what is available aftermarket.

Assuming your battery figures are consistent iíd Be checking all the electrical connections particularly to the starter motor and then if all else fails iíd Pull the starter motor and clean it up and try again and if that didnít work go for a new one.

Thanks guys. I’ll have a look at the starter. Found new starters from EME and Beemer Boneyard for under $200.

There are two common things that go wrong with these starters: magnets inside become dislodged or the internal planetary gear cover drops into the armature. Probably your symptoms point to a loose gear cover. You can put back the original cover, replace the cover with a new one (a few $) or get a new starter. I ended up doing all three, it that order.

Thanks gents - that’s three votes for a starter. I’m going to go for a new one since I have another trip coming up and don’t have time to try to fix it. At least she didn’t leave me stranded.

Pulled and disassembled the starter. I donít know much about starters but I assume Iím looking at the planetary gear cover and also that it shouldnít look like this. There are holes burnt through the cover at several points.

Done, done & done. I went Valeo instead of cheap Chinese junk after seeing insides with plastic gears.

Had similar starting symptoms. Disassembled starter even farther than this to check magnets, which turned out to be firmly attached. My planetary gear cover was much worse than this one, half eaten away. I fabbed one out of sheet metal then checked EME and found out how cheap and available they were. At the same time got their superduper starter cables, which I ran in parallel to the existing ones. Starter turns much more readily.
