September Colorado Trip ?

Planning on going to Colorado in September. Looking for any feedback/suggestions on my routes, especially with the fires.

9/13 Thursday Boulder to Fort Collins...

9/14 Friday Fort Collins to Paonia...

9/15 Saturday Paonia to Colorado Springs...
https://goo.gl/maps/3bNvExymepF2

9/16 Sunday Colorado Springs to Boulder...

5 years ago I rented from House of Motorrad (R1200GSW), this time I'm just getting a F800GS. I'm going to try some dirt, but my routes are all tarmac. Since I'll be by myself, I don't want to end up in a bad situation.

Are you camping or motel?

What dates ?

Depending on when the leaves change, rooms may be hard to come by in the Paonia/Hotchkiss area.. Most popular leaf peeping part of the state.

Plus hunting seasons.

5 years ago, the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park (92) was one of the favorite parts of my trip. I don't have enough time this year to make it down 550 Ouray to Durango, so I'm hoping routes I picked will give me a little free time (except Friday) to find some range roads to explore.

Since you are going to have an F800GS you should try and figure out how to get across Kebler Pass if possible. You seem to be on all paved highway, not that those are bad roads and you can't do everything. Also, there is a possibility of snow around those days, although rare...

I was hoping to get back in the R1200GSW, but it was rented. Iím more if a road rider, hence the old R1100S and now the 1200S,

I am going to try some jaunts on dirt, but as I wrote originally, Iíll be by myself and donít want to get in a bad situation alone

I looked at the Top of the Rockies Rally site and the have a good map for Kebler Pass. I’ve ridden 92 along the Gunnison before, so I’ll take the dirt route instead

I think you will like Kebler better. They're both great though. Kebler's like 50% paved these days anymore... Or so it seems... It has so much mag chloride on it the dirt is rock hard. If it's raining though, don't even try... At least if you have a firm, fixed deadline to be in the Springs.

the entire trip got cancelled because of Hurricane Florence.

On Monday, the NOAA showed it as a CAT 4 making a direct path from Wilmington, NC to Raleigh. My wife told me I could still go, but who of us would leave their wife and daughter at home under those conditions?

I changed my plans to fly out today so I could still attend my friends wedding, but Southwest pulled the plug on that yesterday.

House of Motorrad was nice enough to refund all my money, as was Southwest, but now I'm stuck here with my helmet, jacket, pants and gloves making the slow UPS ground trip back to NC.

I guess I'll go out and look at the R1200S and drink a beer while I wait for a good college football game to come on.

I would have left the wife at home, but that's me!

Cheers
