Latest on HID Lighting

All,

My high beam HID has stopped working so it's either time to get a new bulb or new ballast. I haven't determined which is bad yet. Anyway, it's been many years since I've purchased this set and the company that I bought them are no longer in business. I believe the low beam was from the Midnight Moose group purchase (yeah I know, a long time ago) and the high beam was from the Xenon Factory. Does anyone have a recent company they deal with for HID items for a R1100S?

Thanks

Check out the kits at DDM Tuning. That's where I sourced the kits for my GS.

I've been using this for a little over a year. It has an excellent beam with a sharp cut off on the low beam. No ballast to hide & is waterproof. I cut a slightly smaller hole in the cover & the fan protrudes through to cool it.

Also got mine from DDM tuning.

I've since replaced them with ballast-less M1 LEDs from Evitek. The high beam pattern and throw are just as good as HID and they're instant on. The low beam has great cut-off, so no blinding oncoming traffic, but the light is scattered side-to-side and I don't get enough reach. May go back to HID on the low if fiddling with aim and the installation depth doesn't fix it.

Here's the Evitek site. They list H4 here but also have H1 and H7 M1s. The transaction (Cindy link) is via Alibaba, so you may not want to open that can.

Try the one I got, it's got a full bright pattern far beyond the PIA bulb it replaced & runs on less power. It is a true white not yellowish at all. I talked to the seller as he has a couple different ones & asked his recommendation for a projector lamp & he said this one.

Are the retrofit LED's better than they use to be?

I installed LED's in a couple of my 4 tire vehicles and the H/beam of the R1100S.

LED's are bright but they don't seem to project the light down the road.

Yes. My high-beam LED has good distance and side light. Can't imagine better unless you run driving lights mounted equally high. If you're bothered by reflections from signs and markers, there's plenty of that, but it picks out animal eyes just as well.

I'm not satisfied with the low beam, though. Cut off couldn't be better, but most of the light is on either side lighting up the shoulders but not much directly ahead. Looks like a focus issue.

Sounds like you picked the wrong ones, mine has edge to edge clean illumination with a crisp cut off & probably double the distance over my former PIA bulb.

To be clear, my low beam is better than a halogen bulb, like PIAA, but not as good as the HID it replaced. I may give the one in your Amazon link a go if I can't get better results from this one (they look suspiciously alike).

Is yours designed to be specific for right-hand drive countries, meaning is there an up-sweep to the cut-off on the right only (see shot below)? I ask because mine's cut-off is crisp and level across the middle but sweeps up on both sides.

Yes it is similar to your pic. The lens/reflector creates the cut off as euro bikes have different lenses. Pretty sure it isn't the LED.

You have to select the correct bulb. H1 low beam, H7 high beam.

Just looked & they're FOS, it fits & works fine. Just cut a hole slightly smaller than the fan in the rubber cover & all the wiring fits inside with the fan sticking through the cover hole. Been running mine for about a year now, big difference in illumination.

I onderdeed both a H1 and H7. I'm going to give those a try. Hopefully I'll have the same good results as you. Thanks for the info.

Let us know how it turns out. I'd especially like to know how the H1 does.

I am running a DDM HID low 5k /55W and a Cyclops high LED bulb. Very strong combination in my opinion. I had a DDM HID high but it took dangerously long to get to full power.

That's one thing the LED's do right, instant on. They also use less power for similar output. Also with the newer designs there's no ballast to hide.
JD let us know how you like them. I haven't switched high beam out yet & would be interested in your opinion.

I will let you know. I'm dealing with new flooring in the house so I will not be able to install the LEDs until next weekend. I'll take pics too.
