H7 Bulbs
I did search, I swear....
I'm tired of having to replace the low beam in my R1200S every 9 months. Beside what I can buy at an autoparts store, is there a good (bright), longer lasting bulb than 85hrs? I'd consider LED, but didn't know if the one's with ballast would fit in the R1200S bucket. I know PIAA make some, but I can't find any statement of life expentanecy.

I too would like know what folks are using / recommending. I think I'm running on borrowed time.

The Sylvania H7 I replaced them with today say they average 85hrs of life. Enough for a "normal car" to last for 1 year.

I've had Sylvania SilverStar Ultra in both high and low beams for almost 2 years.
Now watch them both blow the next time I ride it... |

I’ve used PIAA for five years without needing to change, I do carry a spare now!

PIAAs are still going strong, it appears, after a long but unspecified time.
I've been using the Silverstars in my cars for a while. I never counted the hours but those things burn out like they're on a timer. If one side goes out the other goes within a couple hours. I've learned to just replace them in pairs.

Are you saying the one PIAA bulb has lasted for five years or that you have not changed brands for five years ?

The longlife bulbs last longer because they are dimmer. That is a fact. From what I understand, the Philips XtremeVision are the best bulbs you can buy at this time.

I have a pair of H7 LEDs that I tried in my R1100S high beam. They weren't bad, but not as much light as I'd hoped for. I ended up using an H1 LED (from the same manufacturer) in my low beam, and a cheap H7 HID setup from Amazon in the high beam.
That works pretty well, as tested on a recent nighttime blast across unfamiliar desert roads in Nevada. Even the H1 low beam was OK to 50-60mph, but with the H7 HID, I was fairly comfortable at 70mph (and I'm a pretty timid rider, really cautious of overdriving my lights). So, I have 2x H7 LEDs and 1xH1 LED if anybody wants to try them. $12 each, plus shipping. |

I heard that the bulb is a PITA to replace on the 1200s. Is this true? You have any pointers before I go and break stuff?

I'm left handed and was having a hell of a time changing a bulb on my R12S. Fussing and cussing didn't help. Just couldn't get the clip to catch. Backed up, remembered I was a lefty, switched to my right hand and Voila!! FIXED!
