WA ride to the Palisades and Badger Mt.

Managed to get out again for a ride this week but took the more comfortable bike. It was another sunny day but cool in 50's and 60'sF.

The plan was to revisit Douglas Creek that runs down past the Palisades and into the Columbia River just south of Wenatchee. I did this ride 15 years ago on the S and managed to make it through even though the road was supposedly closed due to a washout section.

Heading east from Seattle past Mt.Index and through Tumwater Canyon on Hwy. 2-

Cool colored cups that clip into chainlink fencing to form a picture at the Palisades school-

I started up Douglas Creek from the south this time as opposed to the north entrance on the S. This year's pic and then one from 2004-

Looks the same-

Stopped for a photo of a waterfall but I didn't want to ride down the trail as I was not sure I could ride back up-

I fell twice while walking back up the trail so I decided it was lunch time-

After lunch I found a trail that worked around the washout and another that went down to the waterfalls from the north side-

After several stream crossings I came to one I remember on the S-

I remember because it had a steep descent to the creek and I knew the S would not be able to go back up if needed. As I crossed the creek I was distracted by a side-by-side going up that same steep trail. I lost momentum or picked the wrong line and stalled the Africa Twin. Restart, lurch forward a couple feet and repeat until I dropped the bike-

[

Luckily for me three men came down from where they had parked their Jeep because they didn't want to try the climb. With four of us we managed to get bike up and I lurched to the top. After that is was smooth sailing-

Another now and then but both times it was freshly graded-

Graded until you come to another water crossing-

Not a Kansas farm town but Waterville, WA in the distance-

Up on Badger Mt. I found an old cemetery. It looks like some disease came through between 1896-1898 as 25% of people buried there died in those years. An additional 25% were men that died during WWII-

Once off Badger Mt. I beat it for home but stopped at Deception Falls for a pic. Waterfalls will be the theme of this years trip to TOR with Ralf so I was trying to get some practice-

Fun day except the tip over and all my photos seemed a little off in contrast/lighting/color so I had to mess with them more than usual. New windshield-fail, new seat-okay, new boots-great/watreproof and repositioned shifter for new boots-fail, had to adjust it twice on the ride.

Considering how much it has changed around Seattle in the last 15 years it is refreshing to see someplace that has not changed at all.

Great article, loved it. Nothing like a few downs with the UPs to add character to a journey..

Thanks!

What you again with the maps? Maybe this evening, heading out for early dinner.

Okay, so GoogleMaps didn't work quite right as it thinks you can't get through Douglas Creek Canyon, which for all practical reasons is true. I crossed out the extra routing.

Thanks RB, maybe next time, give me a couple of days notice and I will meet you.

I like your maps because the roads you travel are not too far from me.
I have never explored that section between Wenatchee and Soap Lake.

Cheers

Hey Drop-

Badger Mt. used to be one of my bicycle rides. The top 1.5 miles, at 18%, was unpaved on the north side, going up from Waterville. All paved now. I won't be doing Douglas Crk again but between that and Badger Mt. is the lovely Rock Island Grade Rd. up and over to Waterville.

Let me know the next day trip you do if you know more than a day or two in advance and wouldn't mind some company. I have only the S, so the uphill rocky trail stuff would be more than iffy.
