BMW Cruise Control on R1100S
Ever since I rode my grandpas 2009 R12RT and experienced true cruise control I have always wanted it for my bike. I have a throttlemeister but ya know it’s not the same. It’s great but not that great and I find myself turning it off more often than using it because it drifts “on”. Sure, I could probably add heavier grease to keep it from coming on. IDK. I travel a lot and to me it’s worth all the work.

Regardless, I’m a mechanical engineer and I enjoy doing cool stuff like added cruise to the 11s. I don’t want just any cruise, I want BMW cruise control. No ugly aftermarket crap. I really haven’t had the motivation to start making it happen until I saw someone on the r1100s FB page have it on his bike that he is selling.

Credit goes to Roland from I guess Australia. He’s currently selling his bike. I tried to get a hold of him but with not luck. Sorry, I'm using your photo. If its a problem I'll delete it. *edit I swapped in my photos once I installed the switch*

Since then I have researched a ton and learned a lot. Then thought I would start a thread to show my build since there is not any info on this here.

Found a good document on the r1200cl showing the wiring diagram’s and everything. Think I’m going to use this data along with the r1200rt parts to make this work. All advice is welcome, I’m here to learn too.

Here is what I’ve found.

R1200RT cables and cruise control. Maybe I use this complete setup and modify it. Idk until I purchase the components or get better advise here.

This is the start of the wiring diagram I created to fit this on to the 11s.

I'm open to all suggestions on how to make this happen. It's going to happen one way or the other.

R1200CL Diagram:

Current plan is to get:
  • R1200RT cruise control
  • R1200RT bowden box & cables
  • LH Early R1200RT control switch or CL switch. One without windshield switch.
  • RH Switch control and throttle - unsure yet. TBD

Surprisingly enough these parts are relatively cheap on ebay.

Any suggestions?

I know you mentioned factory but I'll offer that I've done Rostra electronic cruise installations on 2 1150RTs (similiar to the S) with good results.

I touch on it at the bottom of the string (Craig G) here:

I thought I was being original by connecting the Rostra actuator cable directly to the throttle tube as I had not heard or read of it being done before. This eliminates the need to mess with the Bowden box thus simplifying things dramatically. Additionally I used the factory switch as your pic shows. As I mentioned in the RT forum this setup has worked flawlessly for 25K miles...

I pieced together everything I need to do the installation on my S but I'm not sure I'll ever get around to it.

BTW - I just noticed you're in Richmond. As a kid I spent summers on my Uncle's farm near Lynn...just up the road from you. Still go out there for some tractor time once in a while.

Thanks for the info and link. I guess my main preference was something that used an OEM control switch and functioned the same as well. If using a Rostra actuator makes more sense I will go that route. Also all depends on cost too. This is the type of info I'm looking for. Thanks!

Yup! Been to Lynn many times. My daughter has softball games up there all the time. We take the 11s too. I also like to ride up that way on back country roads and get lost on purpose. Makes for a fun trip.

My biggest complaint on my S, no cruise. Is there room under the seat behind the shock to put the actuator? A lot of K bike guys did an audiotex cruise control that is no longer produced. Required a square handlebar switch about 2 inches square.

I have not investigated all the possible mounting locations on the S but I found few (really just one) options on the RT. That is on the bottom of the fwd frame that supports the upper ball joint of the telelever. It works out well logistically for cable and electrical routing. A beefy tie wrap supports it.

I would never opt for anything but the factory switch... it's ergos are perfect. Anything else just cheapens the look of the bike.

I am pretty certain the r1200rt cruise is can bus and would require the can buss signals
I looked into upgradeing the r1200rt to a cruse controll and it required a ecu with the cruise controll
enabled, so I would think the only practical solution would be to use the bmw switches which
will have different connectors and a third party controller and servo.

brentw1 06-10-2019 04:20 PM

it looks like the cl unit is not can buss the speed info comes from the instrument cluster
it might work as is have you tried it/

R1100S2000 06-12-2019 06:33 AM

Does anyone have the schematic for the r1200rt? Just curios how it is compared to the CL.

When I'm ready to buy a unit it will probably be the CL version. Around $80 on ebay.

brentw1 06-12-2019 10:19 AM

you do not want the r1200 version, they require can bus I spent lots of time looking at adding it
to my r1200rt which doesnt have it,
the parts must be added and the ecu must have it enabled they really have locked up most of
the service parts on the r1200 with the can buss
start with a cl it looks like the closest thing you will need the cable junction box from a cruise control bike and if you get the cl switches they migh have the correct connectors the controlls on the can bus r1200xx has different connectors

Ill go with the CL unit. For the cable design I’m going to try and use the RT bowden box and custom make the cables. Used parts are cheap so if it doesn't work I’m not out too much. I think overall it should be a pretty cool set up. My bike is a 99 so ill have to update the cable deflector. Which what I believe will allow for the push pull cable set up.

I’m getting pretty excited about making this work.

I jumped the gun and bought this 2007 R1200RT bowden box and cruise control. It was only $48 shipped. I know I don't need the cruise control module but it was included. It will allow me to test fit and make mounts, etc.

Anyone have an suggestions on image size for the forum? Would love to have all these pics one size. Currently they are annoyingly large. I now use cubeupload as a host since photobucket is a joke. Is there a good program to resize them prior to upload? would that solve it? Suggestions? **I figured it out. I just resize them with an app then upload.**

As for a dash light for cruise control I was thinking of a way to add it with out making it look non-oem. I noticed I have a battery light, but what is the actual purpose of this light? Doesn't do anything for a low battery. Is it for if the alternator isn't charging??

For 10 years it has been useless for me. Would it be a good idea to make this my cruise dash light? might change the color of it to blue like the high beam and change the image to something cruise control related.

giarcg 06-13-2019 07:16 AM

The battery light illuminates when alternator output is less than battery voltage... so yes, you can assume the alt or voltage regulator is inop if the light comes on while the engine is running.

I believe there are at least two unused light locations on the stock dash which could be used. BMW uses an amber or yellow light on the LT and GT to indicate the cruise is active but, obviously, color is your preference.

For simplicity I use a small amber LED on the RT placed deep down under the dash. Not obvious when not illuminated but shows up well when lit.

R1100S2000 06-13-2019 11:43 AM

If I end up using the battery light I will probably cut off the top of #11 and insert something amber or whatever in its place and cricut out a cruise control logo. I wont know until I dig in to it.

giarcg 06-13-2019 03:55 PM

Not sure why you would eliminate a usefull warning light in order to add a redundant indicator light for cruise... after all you'll know when its engaged. Especially since you're trying to retain the OEM nature of the bike.

Does this bike have ABS and if so do the two bottom lights of the 5 light cluster serve as the ABS warning lights? Mine is non-ABS so I dont know... was thinking you could use one of them.

giarcg 06-13-2019 04:05 PM

I used something similiar to this... unobtrusive and easy to see when lit
