1200s Dies When Bars Turn Right

Backing my bike into a parking spot this morning and the engine & all electronics died when I turned by bars to the right. Only to the right, not the left. Straighten them up and I can fire it right back up, but put the bars back to the right and the power goes off. Clearly there is a short and since the starter & kill button are on the right side controls, I assume it's somewhere in that direction. Anyone have a similar experience on the 12S?

Kind of common on the R1100S. The wires going to the ignition switch would break from flexing and turning to the right would pull on them. Might be the same on the 1200. The 1100 wires came around the frame on the left so a turn to the right would pull on them. My 1100 broke a couple of wires right at the switch.

Yeah Kevin, not so much a short as a broken wire. Like RB says.....check the wires to the ignition switch and the right handlebar controls.

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

Kevin, as mentioned this has come up before. Have a look at this post and link within R1200S issues (stranded today) . Good luck!

Yep that happened to mine last year. Either fix it yourself or take it to an independent shop. I talked to the guy from the BMW dealer and he said the wouldn’t just fix it, but have to replace that entire part of the harness.

Even with the concierge pickup and delivery, it was only $100

Please describe (extra bonus points for a pic), as to where location-wise this break can occur ie. how far from RH switchgear, along side the harness or elsewhere...

It'd be beneficial to others to verify and remedy this issue before it comes down to actual break-up and someone doG forbid gets stranded away from civilization...

Thanks a million !

It's the first zip tie that secures the right hand wiring to an area that does not move along with the handlebars.

The pics in the link are pretty good. I would take a pic of mine but it's been cut as well.

That's very helpful - thanks a lot!!

I did see the pic with wire loom but wasn't sure where that may be thus the question...

The wires on my 1100 were broken at the ignition switch.

Not my pics but the same location-

Ignition Part #2
