What mileage can I switch to synthetic?

I'm sure its here, and I'm looking right now, but offhand does anyone know when it becomes acceptable to switch to synthetic motor oil?

Subject of wildly varying, semi-religious opinions without any supporting data.

My own: 10K is safe. If it isn't broken in by then, running it longer on conventional isn't gonig to do any more good. Most bikes you could probably start using synthetic at 1K without issue, but waiting seems safer to me.

BTW, I'm a Mobil 1 15w-50 car oil fan.

The best advice i've seen herein is to make the switch once the engine stops burning oil. That seems to occur between 8-10k miles. Mine is still burning it up @ 4,200.

Everything Markjenn said. Yup, religous for some folks. I love the mobil-1 15w50 automotive too.

I switched at 12k when oil consumption seemed to have bottomed.
It went back up between there and 15.5k. Might have been harder summer riding, but I went back and did one more batch of dino oil
for 3k miles, and will try syn again now. Some seem to quit using much oil by 6k. Others seem to need 20k. I think you'll never be far off the mark if you convert at the 12k service.

My S at 18,000 miles still likes to burn oil. I figgered the semi-synth 20W50 was a good compromise.
