2002 1100S Throttle body question...
I know! I have lots of questions. But I'm new to these bikes and I've been getting very helpful input here, so...
![]() On my RT, when I synched my TBs, it was suggested to only adjust the right side. Is this true for a 2002 1100S? I was just looking at the TBs and the right side seems to be dialled all the way in, so I imagine I will have to adjust the left side as well..? Any links to good step-by-step instructions? The Clymer procedure seems good, but would love some more detail. Also, the vacuum hose is plugged with a screw. Might this have to do with the canister having been removed? No problem with that, right? Thanks again! |

Same as the RT... get a rubber cap, will look much better than the screw in the hose.

Rubber cap Part #: 13 54 7 694 924
I don't know what to make of those throttle body adjusters. Does it look like your stop screws have been moved? There should be blue paint on them.

Isn't that the idle adjustment screw?

Yup. I don't feel it needs an adjustment right now; it's running quite nicely. I was just wondering if that right side adjuster looks ok seated all the way down like that. It makes me think that when I do need an adjustment, I will only be able to go one way on the right side...

If you had the bike from new or pretty close like I have adjusting just the one side works well I have only ever adjusted the right side on mine but with bikes as old as they are now not really a luxury you have until you have the bike bike back on the straight and narrow as they say.....
The more photos I see in this thread the more suspicious i’d Be the screw in the pipe..... Jeeze!! As for the adjuster screwed all the way down that ain’t right and if the bike is running ok i’d Be looking for other bodges because it shouldn’t be set up like it is.

What suspicions arise for you concerning the screw in the hose? I see it as just a less elegant option than putting a cap on the nipple, but would love input on what it might possibly indicate, so that I can investigate a little... I'm planning to strip the bike down as far as my pay-grade allows and look for things that seem funky. Any more obvious things to look for? Again, I am currently experiencing no issues at all, just getting to know this new ride. I might bring it in to a certified BMW mechanic just to give it a once-over, as I don't know the ins and outs of what is normal for the S. (and I'm not a mechanic!) ...unless of course, any of you forum members live in LA and want to give me some live pointers. ![]() |

Well,
All kinds of people fancy themselves as mechanics. Some, that you will find here, are painstaking perfectionists. Actually, most people on this board are that way. Other's out there, may be a little sloppier, but it will still work. Then there's those that everything they touch they screw up. I think what Chris is getting at is just go through the bike and clean up stuff like that, make sure there's no surprises anywhere. But, I could be wrong... maybe he's getting at something else.

If you ask here, on advrider, and on bmwsporttouring.com, I can almost guarantee there is someone within 50 miles of you doing a tune-up this weekend.

Buying new rubber caps for the TB’s is a very simple uncomplicated process but the previous owner chose a bodge instead clearly the cable adjuster is another so what else is there?? But what I have seen so far gives me zero confidence the previous owner no doubt talked a good fight but i’m Seeing little to back that up.
Strip it and start from scratch but who knows maybe there’s a Lennie Induct and SJ underneath ![]() There you go the side I ajust I bet it hasn't moved more than a couple of mm in 40,000 miles. ![]() Looking at the angle of the cable in the OP's photo my guess the previous owner has had it in bits moved the cable and instead of stripping it again and doing the correct routing he's adjusted the cable.....

As I have ridden over 300 miles in the week I've owned it (mostly in LA traffic) and experienced no trouble, I'm going to leave well enough alone for now and address it when it is time for an adjustment. Make sense? |

you should definately check it and check it at light throttle as you pull it off the stop,
they will appear to run "WELL" but a accurately set up one will vibrate less and pull more smoothly off the line, at more open throttle settings the cable ajustemnts dont make as much difference, out of the 30 or 40 twins ive done, only 2-3 were properly ajusted, and all were happier if they were accurately synced, and Ive never had one with a ajuster all the way down. I assume you have some slack in the throttle at the grip? |

also non stock plugs improve idle and starting i use the bosch 4 wire ones
beemer boneyard has them. |

and I would never use a screw as a plug the threads leak
there must be no vacumme leaks either at the taps, throttle shafts or boot to head o rings, adjuster orings etc. all of these can have leaks and cause poor idle and and take off sync. if all of those things are good the factory set idle stops usually dont need adjustment and the bypass screw usualy are within 1/8 turn remember all of these things are 15 years old now and the rubber bits are failing. |

Over the years syncing the TB’s and getting the motor to run just right is close to an art form never done more than 5000 miles on a set of plugs, the knurled adjuster in the photo is years old but means I can get my fingers in and hold it just so because locking the adjuster off will knock the TB’s out of sync.
Better still one needs two pairs of hands.... wifey normally holds the throttle at 4000k while I do the balancing. But.... the real results come with the newer latest injectors another level altogether too the point I do not have to sync the TB’s anywhere near as much as I used to.

Are the big Brass Screws turned out approximately equally? That cable adjuster all the way in does look a bit alarming. I too would look at cable routing to see if this is compensating for something pinched, or pulled too tight on the other side.
