A Beautiful Day for a Ride

Perfect Utah day. But getting hot. Possibly heading to Telluride as the bike was running great. New fuel pump, new brake lines, charged battery... Full tank. What could possibly go wrong?

The buzzards like to hang out on the gate waiting for their meal...

Well, a lot. When the new fuel pump starts making crazy noises and the bike starts stopping... No gas... gas... no gas... Then dead...

No cell service. No people around. 48 miles from home...

So I parked the bike in a reasonably safe spot. Started hitch hiking and caught a ride 15 miles to La Sal Utah. There, I ran into a 90 year old man who likes to just go for rides to drink his pop... So he drove me all the way 28 more miles to my doorstep. I borrowed a friends trailer and headed back.

Three hours from the death rattle later...

voilà! The journey ended six hours later back at my house....

Of course I had that Dwight Yokum song "1,000 miles from nowhere" in my head all day.

Well, stuff happens... This is only the third time in 20 or even 30 years or longer or so that something has happened like this.

Real sorry your day went like that CK, always a possibility with..Well..any piece of machinery, or anything for that matter.

What fuel pump was it?

My 09 GS 1200 turned into a push toy leaving Texline predawn headed towards Taos. Not much out there that time of day. I feel your pain

Nice images. Lasalle Mountains look beautiful in the background. Adventure beats sitting by the pool in your backyard.

Well, I only posted because I liked the blue skies and mountains, and there's not much posting happening here these days. But then, lo and behold, suddenly at just about the same time Lennie posts!

That does suck. It has bee a few years since I’ve been stranded, and never that far away. Hopefully will be a quick/easy fix.

Dang... what a bummer. I was enjoying the first couple pictures and thinking about how much I dislike living in the mid west. Someday I hope to move west. Love the color of your jeep.

I got stranded on my way back from DC last weekend due to a broken valve stem. Wife had to drive 3.5 hours to get me. She was just happy to be rescuing me for once.

Guessing fuel line popped off the new pump?

Freedom calls

Bummer...ya know, you just got everything together, the bike’s all ready, full tank of gas, blue skies, broad horizons, thinking road trip, freedom beckons. Then the Manure hits the rotating ventilation surfaces. Dreams crushed, freedom escapes. But hey you met a unique character who was kind enough to drive you home so not a complete wash.

I’m about to embark on my 2019 tour de Cali. (https://goo.gl/maps/2nrHTVEf1Eov6oQ1A) Redwoods (tallest living things) on the Big Sur coast to the Sequoias ( largest) in the western Sierras to Bristle Cone Pines (oldest) in Southern Sierras to Lake Tahoe and back to Santa Cruz via Kirkwood. Mapped out the twistiest routes.

Recently went through the entire bike replaced the motor after a cam chain "mishap", deleted the ABS, replaced rubber brake lines with SS, new Lithium Battery, Rocket sprockets, extended spline clutch disc, every fastener torqued to spec, SS fastener kit, new Pirelli Angel ST’s, added right angle valve stems, filled tires with Ride-On, fresh fluids all the way around, HID low beam, LED tail light, balanced throttle bodies, new fuel and air filters. I’ve put 1500 miles on the “new” bike since rebuild so confident I can answer freedom’s call. Fingers crossed.

Of course, now you need to take lots of pictures and then post a ride report of your journey!

I’m about to embark on my 2019 tour de Cali. (https://goo.gl/maps/2nrHTVEf1Eov6oQ1A)

That's a nice loop. My in-laws live in the Central Valley and have a cabin in Long Barn (off CA-108), my wife wants me to take my motorcycle out there so I can ride around.

I'd like to learn the details about ABS/servo delete..

Did you have to rewire the brake/tail lights?

What OEM brake lines did you have to replace with SS lines?

New fuel pump, new hoses, another waste of 12 hours and everything is back to normal again! Runs perfect in my garage..... The true test will be to go 100 miles way out into the desert on highway 95...
