R1200s stuck exhaust valves

Did my first valve inspection/adjustment and spark plug replacement on my '07 R1200s with 15K miles. As best I recall, one intake valve needed a tweak. All went well, double-checked everything, started it up, and it idled fine for 10 minutes. No tapping or clicking sound. Couple weeks later on a test drive all well for 1st mile with no unusual sound, then loss of power and stall. Would restart, but die. Pushed bike home and took a look. Left side valve clearances good, but plugs a bit fouled. Right side plugs good, but exhaust valves stuck. Would appreciate any thoughts about the possible cause. Also, the dealer now has the bike. If the valves are bent, how major a repair is this?

Depends... It could just be bent valves... or it could have damaged the piston and cylinder head as well.

I'm wondering what series of events occurred to cause the piston to contact the exhaust valves??????

Hard to say without looking at it. Were you reving it high before it lost power? Had it been setting up for a long period without being ridden. How many miles were on it? so many variables. The dealer should be able to answer your questions after they tear it down.

After removing the cylinder head, the dealer found a "foreign object." Couldn't tell from their picture what the object could be. This was a winter project, so I had the valve covers off for some time, working on when it was warm. More later...

I'm just trying to lighten up the situation , but after the tune up are you missing any :

1. Feeler guages
2. Box wrench
3. Those small plastic/cardboard tubes that protect new spark plug gaps

No, no, no, nothing that obvious. Here's the pic the dealer sent. He described it as a hex-shaped object, but I can't tell from the pic. The other pic is supposedly of the bent exhaust valves. He said they searched and didn't see the object had broken off anything internal.

Could that debris item be part of a fuel injector?

Almost looks like a Mikuni main jet.

Sorry, applying too new tech and later model thinking, but it just seems unlikely that any part of a carb could break loose and then travel. Need a more clear pic.

Looks like a broken Hex bit that fell out of its holder and fell through spark plug hole. 2cnts from tjs.

This is just like watching NOVA on TV.
NASA receives low res photos from a flyby satellite like Cassini or Voyager.
Everyone is excited and hypothesizing.
Then you get the high res photo and everyone is coming up with a theory and a scenario.

Part #7 is called "swinging metal buffer." very classy name. Just checked on my Bike. It is a rubber support bushing. Along with part #6 secures the airbox to the rear subframe.

If that part did come from the intake side, how did it get past the intake valves and bend an exhaust valve??

Sure looks like part #7 that Groceryrun posted, but aren't those parts externally attached to the airbox??

The plot thickens!

Good luck!

Not item 7 in above schematic. PN 13717672542 below:

What other motorcycles, loose parts, tools do you have in your garage/workshop? in other words, what else have you been working on or moving about while the bike was idle and partially disassembled.

Hmmm. I did change the air filter during my winter project... Thanks for the ideas.
Was working on several other projects this winter, but the R12S was separate from the main work area; no other parts were nearby. The dealer is 2+ hours away, so I won't get to see the actual object until I pick up the bike. Dealer says there are general problems getting parts due to the virus, so don't know when that might be. Until then it's the K12RS

Do you have small children or enemies that might just put something into the intake tract?

My buddy's 2 year old just loved the sound of a screwdriver banging away on a Silver Smoke 90S!

Cheers

No children. Locked workshop. I'm certain I'm my own worst enemy!
