I would start with

Fresh fuel
possibly an oil change
brake fluid & clutch flush
Inspect tires and all rubber components

Was it stored properly? Garaged, was Sta-bil in the tank? What's the location, is it humid? Open tank and smell the fuel... It can damage the pump.

But, in general you can tell by bike condition and assessing the owner.

Probably will need a battery and the recalls performed.

I believe the filter is in the tank along with the pump like my other BMW's. I've seen a couple guys add inline filter but never could figure out the logic to do so.

Definitely will have to replace the fuel filter and hoses inside the tank. A total PITA. Add fuel line quick disconnects while you have the whole thing apart. All this can be purchased from beemer boneyard.

Plan on replacing brake hoses very soon, too. And possibly slave cylinder. None of this is terribly difficult and will give you a lot more insight into the bike's condition. if the bike is in good shape and reasonably priced, go for it! Just expect to drop a few hundred more on little things like this.

Edit: oops realised you said R12s, not R11s. I think most still applies except the R12s might have stainless braided brake lines, saving you a few bux so that's nice.

Why replace the fuel filter when no fuel has been going through the system?
Clean out the old fuel, maybe the injectors, or fuel lines if they look dry-rotted.
Fuel pump/filter should be fine if the bike has been sitting and no fuel has been flowing through the system for years.
