Rekindling an old flame

She hadn't worn her bags in years, but I put the old 'S back into touring duty for a trip this past weekend. My girlfriend and I rode her two up to the North Texas Norton Owner's Association rally in East Texas.

I've toured on this bike all over North America. The last tour was from Omaha to Vermont to Galveston and back to Omaha in July 2016. I bought my R1200RS the following month, in August 2016, and relegated the 'S to local rides.

It was fun reacquainting myself with how the bag mounts attach to the bike and how the bag latches work on the R11S. It was also fun getting back to analogue touring without GPS (other than masking tape on the triple clamp), tire pressure monitors, electronic cruise control, etc. The girlfriend even tolerated not having a top case to lean back against.

Anyway, It's been a while since I've posted here, so I thought I would share my very happy weekend and let you know both my 2000 'S, now with over 79K miles, and I are still alive and kicking.

Oh, and I was awarded best German bike ridden to the rally.

-Jeff

Here's another flame still burning in Texas.

Autumn is definitely my favorite riding season!

Hi, John. Is that the carbon fiber belly pan from the "Light" model? I have one sitting on the shelf.

Sounds like fun! Glad the bike didn't surprise you with any problems.
They are getting old.

The bike's looks are timeless.

She's a good girl. Prettiest bike BMW ever produced.

Mine's an '01 R1100S Light, so yes. It's genuine.

So, you have the part but you took it off?

Mine is not a Light, so did not come with the CF belly pan. The belly pan was recently given to me.

It is in excellent condition, so I gathered the hardware to mount it. But, since I use my bikes, I am reluctant to install it out of fear of it getting stone chip damage.

How has yours held up?

I'd like to see how it looks on your bike. Since it looks like you are also in the DFW area, perhaps we can meet up some time. Alternatively, would you send me a couple more pics of the belly pan on your bike (front, profile, etc?)

-Jeff

Jeff, the CF belly pans (belly pans in general?) are going to get dinged no matter how careful you are. A fender extender helps but it’s still going to get rough.

Also the heat shield inner cover will peel off.

I found a used BCR pan. It’s rough and is my daily rider-pan. The original BCR-pan has been repainted and is only used for shows. Once the graphics have been applied I’ll get it wrapped.

I had my tank cover wrapped and it still looks good. But I don’t know if the wrap can be removed without damaging the paint.

Jeff,
Here you go!

If you want to meet up, I go to the weekly Saturday breakfast at the Original Pancake House in Grapevine once in a while. Every week, members of the BMW Owners of Dallas / Fort Worth (BMW-DFW) club meet to chow down before heading out to do whatever Saturday stuff that people need to get done. I'd be happy to meet you there sometime. Just let me know in advance so I'll be sure to be there. You can message me on FB.

John

I never really liked the belly pans on these, somehow they look out of place, I like the open look better. I feel the same on my Aprilia mille, plus it rides much cooler with it off, sort of important here.
