Question Vanderlinde - popping - help!?!

I recently installed a Vanderlinde exhaust system on my '02 'S'.

I am very happy with the improved exhaust note and performance, but I am disappointed with one thing - excessive popping when rolling of the throttle. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens pretty frequently.

I've identified a leak where the 'up-pipe' connects to the 'y-pipe.' I suspect this leak is causing air to get sucked in during deceleration and igniting excess fuel vapors and is the major source

How do I fix the leak? The modified stock bracket at this connection is tight. I know some guys have mentioned using a sealant on exhaust connections, what do sealant did you use?

Any other Vanderlinde owners have problems with popping? If you fixed it, how did you fix it? I'm looking for ideas

Did you install the chip too?

RTV and exhaust tape will both work as sealants

This is discussed in dozens (literally) of threads

Then patching the leak is the next step.
A bit of popping may remain on hard roll offs,
but it should improve.

might also want to consider doing a throttle body sync. the "pooping" may also just be more noticeable due to the louder exhaust note.

Jclark likes to set off car alarms with his.

I have a 02 with the "B" chip and it "Poops" a little pip on decel, but not alot. Agree with the sealing of leaks and a TB sync. But it will always "poop" some......

Ditto all that. I was toldby alq2 to smooth down the rough mating surfaces with a dremel or other grinder, which I did. Even though I provided sealent the dealer wrench decided not to use it because of the tight fit.
Mine too, pops on deccel now and then.
Synch the throttle for sure.
I'm not sure what it means technically,(Roger?) but brapping the bike at night in the garage shows a *****in' blue flame shooting out the rear when she pops...kool!
My guess it's something to do with richness.

The flaming and popping can be caused by either leanness or richness (as either one can lead to an unburned charge getting into the exhaust and subsequently igniting). Can't be sure what the motor is doing, but it is usually leanness one these bikes. As yet one more piece of evidence, mine almost never popped with the induct/laser-cat-elim/bbp=3 combo. Recently added the SJ-Powerfilter and popping has increase significantly (usually on a rapidly chopped throttle) but is still infrequent. The filter could ONLY have made it leaner.

What we can say definitively is that it's a bit rich in the _exhaust_

Good times. Paint it that funny aqua color and pretend you're foggy testing the Petronas. Now THERE is a fire belcher.

All good points, fix the leak, but I think you need to expect some "poping", mine does a little. It probubly poped some dead stock, just so well muffled you where unaware?
