Back on a boxer...

Hi Gang,

Long time no chat! Glad to see the forum is still going! I thought I would check in and tell everyone I am back on a boxer...picked up a brand new R18 First Edition for 13500. Huge incentives and deals on this model for those of you who are interested.

Pretty cool cruiser...feels like I am riding a ww2 bike...lol. Here are some pics...hope you have all been well.

Very cool bike, I hope the chrome on it is many times better than the crap on the 1200C. I am seeing a few of these for sale around me with super low miles (100-300), makes me wonder why someone would sell off a basically new bike.

Part of the reason for deeeeep discounts is that the R18 isn’t living up to BMW owners’ expectations. Those monster heads may get someone excited but they leave little room for legs. The R18 weighs 718 lbs (!) but has just 91 hp to move all that mass. Add a rider and side bags & you get 91 ponies trying move almost a 1000 lbs. Those are even less stellar than specs of a Road King 114. The idea was great, execution fell way short.

At full pop the R18 rails the HD Road King. I’m definitely not a fan of HD given the price points at full pop I’d be heading to the nearest Harley dealer because the Road King stays true to its colors. HD have been doing it longer and are better at building road pigs. It appears that I’m not the only one thinking this hence BMW dealers are forced to go deep on discounts to trip their inventories of R18 over the curb.

Thanks gang...and I agree, bmw made a great bike but priced it wayyy too high. A common mistake they have made for awhile now.

The big cruiser market is a tough cookie...honda redid the valkryie awhile back and barely sold any at 18k...2 years later I personally witnessed brand new leftover models in any color you wanted for 7999. 10k off and still brand new.

For me the r18 first edition was a no brainer..23k msrp for 13k. Brand new and delivered to my house.

I have really enjoyed riding it so far too...has massive presence and yes the jugs are big but i'm not valentino rossi, so it's not a big deal to me...lol.

Very much the same deal with their VFR1200F. An attempt to capitalize on their smaller counterparts. They were priced ridiculously high and well less than 2 thousand were sold over a three year spread from 2010-2013.

I couldn't pass up my 2013. Lots and lots of bike for almost half ($8775 OTD) of MSRP. I ended up powder coating the wheels and huge exhaust canister and a remap, de-restricting top speed and output. Fabulously brilliant high speed cruiser though my R1100S and Aprilia's annihilate it at even a hint of spirited windy road activity. Different machines suited for different purposes.

I'm eyeing an R18 first addition as well. Be a great cars/bikes and coffee cruiser.

Yeah, I have an older Road King for cruising too. Smell the roses and take in the view.

BMWrider, good for you. If the bike makes you happy that is all that matters. We all like different things for different reasons. It makes me smile to hear you just like riding it. Riding and just feeling like you are enjoying the ride can't be bought. I know people who search for years and can't find that. All the best!!

I'd like to give that bike a try. I also keep wondering if they will be putting that engine into anything else.

Ariel - the 'Atom' folks employed it in their high $$ bike - the ACE
