Exhaust Stud

Who has had the pleasure of removing a sheared off an exhaust stud from the cylinder head? And what did you find the best method to be?
Thanks - Jay

Never an exhaust stud but many similar broken studs. Is there anything left to grip on to or is it flush? If close to flush likely will require you to file the end flat if you can centre pinch the middle of the stud, drill with a centre drill and then carefully drill for for use of an extractor tool, my preference would be something like the Ridgid 35535. Keep wet with penetrating oil and some heat twice a day for a week or so then warm up area prior to trying to extract. What size is that stud about 5mm or 6mm?

You can use the larger extractor the Ridgid size 2 #35540, will still need to drill carefully. If there is any stud to grab on to a small pipe wrench could work, but don't skip the penetrating oil.

Did it rotate at all prior to breaking? If it galled the threads thats a larger problem, still possible to remove though.

With a BMW exhaust stud, you better save your time and skip the extraction phase to go straight to the helicoil repair.
