Ktm 1290 gt

Stumbled across this the other day

https://www.ktm.com/sports-tourer/1290-super-duke-gt/?color=GREY

Sure would like to test ride one.

Test rode it's brother, the Super Duke R, and you would like it. If I were buying a new bike, this would be in my top 3.

not sure about the KTM look, but the specs sound very entertaining.

I would worry about all the electronics. That's part of the reason I love my R12s.

My local dealer (bmw/ducati/ktm) hasn't gotten any yet. They did say I could ride the SDr they have. Nice offer, especially since he knows I'm way, WAY to cheap to buy a new bike.

Strange you saying that because my friend was saying he expected similar to the 1290 SuperDuke that he P/X'd and he was saying what a difference their was between the two different engines.

What i read was it was the same engine wise, the overall bike remained pretty much the same, a little longer and a different tail section.

The main part of our conversation was about how different the two motors are he says the superduke was your classic big twin and you knew when riding it,the new GT is a totally different animal that he would have to ajust too as he prefered the motor from the earlier bike.

Well if he's ridden both of them I'm sure he knows. I've not been on either and to be honest with you not really in the market just thought it was interesting the KTM was producing something touted to be a sport touring bike.

Apart from it was a social visit I was curious as well and it's certainly another way to skin a cat as they say not my thing either but I could understand others buying it.

I love the concept... big v-twin tuned for torque, lightweight, upright-ish seating, big tank, electrics abound with/leaning ABS and TC etc. I bounced on one at the dealership and the suspension is surprisingly compliant - I had expected it to be very firm for a jarring ride which it's not at all. Likely a very comfy ride.

I really wanted to like it but I just can't get over the "Spy vs Spy" styling. KTM touts their tight relationship with some co-resident design firm (that is responsible for the grotesque styling) as a key enabler of their market success. I don't see it that way quite the opposite in fact.

Suspension is electric so it'll be nothing without the ignition on.

I now have 33,000 miles on my KTM 1290 GT. Best bike ever. It's the only bike I've ever owned that I've never opened it up and ran thru the gears. It's just doing crazy illegal speeds before getting out of 2nd gear. 452 lbs/172 HP=Smiles all day.

I'm guessing that bumping the engine up to 1390cc for 2024 was likely not needed but now 190hp and 107 lb ft. Will have to take one for a test run.
