Which ABS do I have?

I recently purchased a 2001 SA with about 6k miles.

Unfortunately, it came with no rider's manual or service book.

I would like some information about the ABS on my bike. Do I have the integated version, ABS II or ABS EVO?

Inquiring minds want to KNOW!

There are not unique ABS-EVO and Integrated-ABS. They are one and the same (there are EVO non-ABS brakes which have the upgraded caliper/rotor combo similar to Integrated-ABS components)

i.e. for ABS, integrated and EVO are synonymous.

2001 is a transition year, so I can't say whether you have ABSII or Integrated ABS. A 2001 owner might be better able to assist there.

good luck

Many thanks for the input, Phac.

Any idea where I can get a little more info on the operation of this system?

I bet that you can still order an Owners manual at your Dealer. Let me look at mine and get the number off the back cover.

I believe that 2003s or 2004s will have semi-integrated EVO brakes...YUK!

If your calipers say "BMW" and your tank has a warning sticker about power brakes then you got EVO. If your rotor has a toothed ring and some funky black wire coming out the side you got ABS. Simple ain't it?

Oh, I definitely have ABS. I have the toothed rings, but my calipers say BREMBO, which are noticeably smaller than the BMW calipers on my bud's 2003 Prep, which is non-ABS.

These are the titles and PN#'s of the books you need for a 2001 R1100SA. They should still be available from your Dealer.

Service and Technical Booklet (US Models)

Riders Manual (US Models)

Big peni s envy eh?

Yeah the new EVO calipers look sleeker...like a Jap bike...the Brembos look a little fuddy.

Dr. Wacko:
You got ABS II or the one before the latest EVO. Remember that when ordering brake lines.

I was looking at two new R1100s at the dealer last week and noticed that there was a slight difference in the shape of the new "BMW" labeled calipers.
After looking closely, I noticed that the back of the calipers on one bike had "Brembo" cast into them, the other bike had "Tokico".
Both bikes where 2004 models and the calipers are almost identical.
Apparently BMW is designing the calipers and contracting the manufacturing to one or the other vendor.
I hope that there is no difference in the pads, could create some confusion when itís time to service them.

Wow! That doesn't sound good...keeping after two vendors for quality control. I can see the recall now...one of your calipers would be recalled but not the other

It's been that way (multi vendor) since the introduction of the EVO system. I remember them mentioning it prominently at the press intro, which struck me as an odd manufacturing type detail to share. I've not heard of any problems with this the last 2 years.
