HP2 Sport - Touring Setup
Recently came across the bike that I have been drooling over for 10 years, a mint HP2 Sport. Sold off my R1100S which I always felt was about the perfect motorcycle for all the riding that I do, and picked up the HP2. The only thing I knew I would have a hard time with was our annual week long trip, as I couldn't carry any bags.
I started sketching and then transferred the sketches to a cardboard template which I then cut out of sheet metal, which I then transferred into a CAD file and got a metal shop to cut on the laser cuter out of stainless steel. I polished this cut piece by hand. I'm super happy with the finished product, and just got back from 8 days of riding through 5 States and 1 Province, over 4000km, and I must say that this is now the ultimate sport touring motorcycle.

You're a clever man, I just use the Bagster setup:roll eyes:..its enough for wet gear, puncture repair kit.

That’s a very professional looking luggage rack. Nicely done!
The bag on it looks rather full and so I wonder if you had a concern about what weight you will carry? I’m sure there must be some extra strength built into the carbon seat structure, but how much before it could be compromised? Any weight has quite a long lever arm to act upon. I have seen a few variations on a rear rack on a few forums now and I would like to fit one myself, but only to carry a few light items. With say a maximum of 10 to 12 lbs. I don’t know much about carbon fibre and erring on the safe side is what I’m thinking. |

That's very nicely done! I think LCPeter made something out of carbon fibre for his bike, and if I can find the photo's of how mine was done I'll post them.
Have you kept the drawings as maybe the metal shop would like to make more?? Cheers

Did you put those wheels on the rear stand?

Yes, both BMW and Pitbull stands work with BST wheels.
But I had to have Marc Parnes machine a custom mount for his balancer. Cheers

Drop, a few guys assumed that your photo was an April 1st Joke when you first posted it. But it’s for real?
I guess that carbon fibre must be a damn stronger material than I thought. |

I have the the CAD file, so making more at this point is very simple, just tell the shop to cut and bend them.

Remember that there is a steel frame under the seat section. The rack attaches at three points, two on the tail where the exhaust attaches, and the third is the seat mounting bracket which bolts directly to the steel frame. Being shaped out of stainless steel its very rigid , so the carbon tail section is actually not supporting the weight independently but rather in conjunction with the steel frame under the seat. When applying weight to the rack, testing with body weight, the rear suspension gives before the tail section flexes at all. The weight is evenly distributed to the bike itself, not the tail section, its as if the rider gained 25lbs basically. Last edited by kaiberg; 08-07-2019 at 06:35 AM.. |

Many thanks for the explanation. Yes I had noticed the neat fixing to the seat screw. I hadn’t realised that there is a steel framework underneath. For some reason I thought it was only carbon fibre. ‘My bad’ as the newer generation say. It also tidies up for me a query over a racing seat advertised for sale without a support. It all makes sense now.
I’m away to the garage to have a look see! |

Kaiberg;
What would it cost to have these made?? Or would you send the CAD file so I could have it made locally??? When I travel on my 12S, I use a Kreiga 20 or 30L bag similar to your set up, so I think this rack would work perfect for me?? Cheers

Hey Droptarotter:
The metal shop I used has a $350 minimum. I paid that minimum but got the manhours with the CAD designer and made two mockups before cutting and bending the final product out of stainless steel. I first did a mockup out of aluminum and then a second test fit piece from hot roll steel. Once I was satisfied with the fit and details I made the final product. Moral of the story is that getting 'one of's' made tends to be expensive. Getting one machined would be subject to the $350 shop minimum, but an order of 4 pieces would also fit into this minimum shop charge, bringing the price per unit down dramatically. I also paid another shop to machine the risers for the exhaust attachment points out of a solid piece of solid stainless on a lathe. I gave him $200 for these parts. ![]()

Kaiberg,
Nice piece you fabbed there. Are the two risers the only mounting points? I can't quite make out if there is a forward mounting point. I'm curious if there is any fore-aft rocking / longitudinal flex under load?

Kevin, look at the first picture at the top of the page. You can see the front mount.

Holy thread revival batman!
I was wondering whether Kaiberg might be willing to share the CAD file for a fee so I can get one of these made in Europe? |
