Question Chain Tensioner

I recently bought a 1999 R1100S and decided to change the oil myself. Well I should have followed my instincts instead of looking at the manual. I thought the oil drain plug was on the bottom but the manual kinda looks like the plug by be on the side of the cylinder head. Oh well, I removed the lower chain tensioner and now I'm not sure what I've done. Is there any critical alignments? Any advice for a new R1100s owner?

Thanks,

I had to take my cam chain tensioners out to install my cam sprockets and they simply fit back into the head and operate as they should once properly torqued. I don't think there's any real precision adjustments to be made to them and they should function just fine once you've reinstalled them.

don't listen to JohnyDanger... that guy's a loose cannon and less than reliable. He once said that he spanked me through salt river canyon when I was merely sight seeing.

JohnnyDanger sounds pretty smart to me . . . I like what he wrote so he must have spanked you.

Au Trout only has two posts... wouldn't trust him either.

BTW, didn't spank me. Only had a few seconds on me.

Please, please, let me interject. I vaguely remember multiple high speed passes up and down the canyon with nary an S in my rear view. And in the scheme of things, a 2 minute or so run of the canyon, a 5 to 10 second whomping is quite a bit... Not to mention that I was running an inferior Bridgestone BT010(F) - BT020(R) tire setup and Mr. N was shod with some ultra stick M-1s. Oh yeah, and I had a bunch of gear loaded on my bike too...

'Course, I probably wouldn't trust me either so shannon does have a point.

By the way, when you get that tensioner back in and you start the bike you'll hear a loud clacking for 5 seconds or so until the tensioner pumps itself up with oil so don't freak out. The same noise will happen after doing an oil change. Just let the bike idle until the sound goes away. It probably wouldn't hurt anything to rev the engine a little while it's clacking, but having proper crank to cam timing, which is affected by the cam chain tension, could theoretically make a difference between proper running, and a close encounter of the valve to piston.

Hey,

There's no chain tensioner on these Bikes, they're Shaft Drive!

You were my guest. I was merely being a good host and letting you build your confidence up.
