James Bay Road
I am contemplating taking a trip with a buddy who rides a Suzuki V-Strom up the James Bay Road: Metagami, Quebec to Radisson, Quebec. - departure from central Ontario. There is one gas stop in 620 kms, at mile marker 381 km - therefore carrying additional fuel is required. I can go, safely, about 225 kms on a tank, therefore need to go another 156 kms (say 2 to 2 1/2 gallons worth) further. Does anybody have ideas or recommendations for carrying an additional 2 1/2 gallons of fuel? And of course, I would have to duplicate the routine for the return trip. My S does not have bags.
The road is paved all the way but the limit on fuel range may limit high speeds as the mileage may drop significantly. The road is VERY remote and running out of gas or mechanical problems can result in big problems! I can just picture calling my wife to come with the truck, and by the way dear, I am 1,000 miles away! Actually, there is no cell phone service so she needn't worry! |

When I was there - almost ten years ago - the fueling station had only 87 octane - and I suspect only 87 available in Radisson. The K11LT ran OK on it.
2.5 gallons is a lot of gas to carry - you'll just have to haul a big fuel can of some kind...OTOH you should get great fuel economy since you will hold a constant speed for so long. Be sure you have a "front door" if you are going to try to maintain high speeds. Quiz the locals in Matagami - how many police cars until you can "go!"? My ticket south of Matagami was for 155 in a 90! Sounds good anyway That was after we slowed down! The road was OK but there are short "dips" that get annoying. There is some traffic - 1 vehicle per half hour, maybe - so if you have problems you will be able to get some help. Wave at everyone! ![]() Spend time with the Cree, IMO... best, Dave |
