M Logo Dreaming of riding a BoxerCup Replika

As an owner of the regular R1100S with center stand, heated grips and luggage rack and ABS, I’ve been dreaming of someday riding a BoxerCup Replika thanks mostly to post by some BoxerCup Replika owners here. But my concern is that my riding skills and racing-attitude aren’t up to the standards of those BoxerCup Replika owners here. I know from reading post by those few BoxerCup Replika owners that their BoxerCup Replika is far better at street racing and sport riding, than the regular R1100S could ever be. And, if one wants a bike to tour on or for commuting or two-up riding, then they should get the regular R1100S, they don’t need a BoxerCup Replika. But if one is a canyon or mountain road racer, and needs a bike that will smoke a 999 Ducati, then the BoxerCup Replika is the only choice. I believe this to be the truth because I’ve read so many post here from those few Replika owner who regularly race and victoriously beat pocket-rocket type bikes in the canyons, on mountain roads etc which proves, with equivocal certainty, that the Replika is a kick-butt race bike that’s as fast as it looks. Until the day arrives that I feel I may be skilled (riding skills) enough to step up to the challenges presented with BoxerCup Replika ownership, I can at least re-read about the BoxerCup Replika’s greatness (apologies to members here who have seen the link below, before.)

Izze, Did you get a calculator out for that one?

This should be a fun thread.

Geeze Mark, little hard on yourself, eh? Frankly, who gives a rats a*s about their attitude, or what the other guys who own a replica do or think (no offense meant). It's not really about needs, its about wants. I guess your feeling is that you'll look like a poser or something? While that's noble, its also a little silly. If you like that bike, want that bike, and can get that bike, by all means, get the bike. Were not in high school anymore and you shouldn't be too worried what other people might say or think about what you do. To quote.."Its all right if it makes you feel better" - Steve Albini or "The jealous ones say that George, the suckers" - Mr Potter from It's a wonderful life.

My two bits.

the beauty of a BCR or Prep is that virtually anyone can ride it close to its potential because of its consistency and predictability. Thats why its a better street bike than anything else out there. It sucks as a competitive race bike in the right hands, but how many street riders spend 2-4 days a week on a well groomed track with thier "S" bikes? However you can run against that guy and his race bike on anywhere canyon road because the road is very unpredictible and the S makes it manageable where as the everyday race prepped telescopic bike is prone to instability even with the best of suspension. I wouldnt let rider ability get in the way of a Replica. However the subtle changes to the replica can be made to your standard S for probably less then it would cost to upgrade to a current model. Wide rear tire, sport shocks, shorter paralever, remove center stand and lower handle bars/windscreen and youre ready to play on an S that has some miles on it and will toast an off the floor Replica still waiting to pop its cherry 18k later.

I've contemplated buying an S since they were first released in 98. In fact, I read Motorcyclist Magazines shootout between the S, the VFR, triumph and other bikes many times. But for some reason, it was not until BMW released the BCR that I decided to get one. Its no where near as fast as my old CBR. But I can ride it with more confidence and have way more fun on it then I can on a faster hypercycle. I agree with SUD-z, I could care less what people think. I am an army officer and the norm is to be very conservative and the average officer does not ride a motorcycle. Most just drive a Ford Ranger Pick-up that they purchased when they were young LT. Get what you want and you can ride as fast or slow as you'd like. Just make sure your happy. You only live once, I think......

"Coat the friction surface of the pads with hi-temp synthetic grease along with spraying the rotors with WD-40. No more noises!"

I love what that site has to say! I'm running out to the garage right now to try these tips out!

and the sarcasm that went with it... and what's up with this?

The CAT also acts as a rear tire warmer, to keep the Replika’s race tire at optimum temperatures (this last benefit escaped my notice, and was pointed out to me by a Pelican parts member, “Thanks“).

Buy what moves you and forget about anything else! If you like it get it no matter what it is.

IMHO it is 90% rider and only 10% bike when it comes to "beating" someone on the road. It is much more fun to have a bike that people think is slow and then you pass them:-)

I don't think anyone's bagging on the Replica... Did anyone read the page attached to the link? I thought it was a spoof at first, but there are vendor links on the page... so I have to assume that this written for the purpose of informative public consumption.

Me thinks MarkC is the one with the issues. I'd hate to think that all this dripping sarcasim was a poor substitute for jealousy.

Yep, I've got a BCR. It's no faster than my previous "S" but I like it and it spins ma wheels. There are only 4 in NZ (although no doubt that will change) and I kinda like having something just a wee bit special.

Not sure where the speed thing comes into it but if MarkC fancy's his chances on a track I'd certainly front up BCR or no BCR.

Spot on Phil! I like the looks and specs of the BCR like everyone else and I keenly recommend them to anyone interested as a great real world road bike. I'd definitely grab one myself if I did'nt already have an S, but not because I thought it offerred anything more than the standard S - cosmetics aside.

Have I missed something? I bumped into a guy who had recently bought a BCR who was convinced that his bike had 12hp over the stock bike, bah blah blah. He'd taken it out to the track and was on his second set of CF valve covers. I wished him well and walked away.

FWIW.

John

Hi Johnny,

Nope BCR is exactly the same as the 'S' in the engine department. I've put a Staintune on and its no different from my previous bike.

However, in true vain BCR owner fashion, I HAVE painted my indicator pods blue and I think that may be good for another 5HP

MarkC,
Iagree with sud-z and the boys on the southern islands at the end of the world. Its a nice looking bike, people look at it, but its an S, no more, no less. What you do with it is up to the owner,(hopefully), and not anyone else. enough said.

Oh dear,

I've just read MarkC's web site. What an amazing amout of time and effort just to slag off one model. Perhaps this obvious satirical bent may be better engaged by taking up a marketing position at BMW?

Lets just hope its not a lifelong obsession!

In fact, why not buy one - now that would really put the hamster among the duck tape

New user here. I purchased a BCR 5 months ago and can't stand the thing. Ok, the handling is great, but the thing is so dang underpowered that everyone and his brother looks for some magical way to give it some extra horses. I will ride my GS anyday over the BCR and will only be slightly slower if the speed stays below 100mph. Especially in the tight stuff like Deals Gap. Just my .02
