Hallo
This is true but not to confuse you it will still have 2 cylinders and will be a boxer- twin as the first model of the new generation will be the K25GS or R1200GS which will debut in Southafrica in January 04.According to the new BMW Motoboss BMW will be still strongly committed to the segments were BMW is strong (sport/tourers and GS) and will enter with new machines where BMW is not so strong yet;sport and naked bikes. So there will be a new S;lighter and stronger!! It will be smoother too. Fro the first pictures it looks like the tranny will be slower internally because the reardriveunit has a much smaller diameter, maybe even a counterbalancer in the engine.Until January it remains to be seen if the stick with the current valve- train which is good for 8500rpm and they optimise it (heads, bigger throttle bodies, lighter components) and maybe add a super- charger to gain horsepower/torque at current rpm levels or go with a true ohc valvetrain that permits higher rpm/hp levels but probably will build wider...To offset this they could mount the engine higher or decrease the stroke but with a bigger bore it would not be good for torque and smoothness. Pretty soon we will know if the changes will be evolutionary or revolutionary but the good news is there will be lighter, more powerful bikes stll with a boxermotor coming, pretty soon! Exiting times Chris |

If you are truly smart you preface your handle with "Dr."

I think if you are truly smart, you let the BBS software perform word-wrap as is it meant to. Sorry, couldn't hold back anymore ...

I think I should clarify my comment. I was sincere. All this information about OHC valvetrains and bores and strokes is very impressive. It just takes someone a lot smarter than me to know what it all means. I just like to ride.

good point ckcarr c}:-P*
as for the new bikes, there will definitely be a new GS and maybe even a GS-SM(supermotard) But no real world info on the other models being redesigned for now.

Hi Bobby
The new bikes will follow in 6 month increments like they did 10 years ago when the RS was the first bike of the new generation of boxers! And yes there will be a new sportier S-Boxer according to the new BMW-Motoboss in a recent MOTORRAD inter- view who said that BMW will go with new models in segments where BMW is not so strong right now;the sportbike and nakedbike segment with each a Boxer and a multi cylinder bike... Chris PS:From the first picture releases of the new 1200GS pretty much ALL will be new the only thing that remains to be seen will be the valvetrain;a optimised current one where the sportbike could be supercharged to make more power or a ohc valvetrain allowing more rpm to make more power;in January we have the answers... well chris, sounds great but what are your credentials? Everyone is speculating and I just had an official BMW visitor or two myself and was given a good idea of what to expect and what not to expect in South Africa as I have plane reservations already,........do you??????

Oh and the whole "new S will be a K'' thing is way off base man. Its a project code name, has nothing to do with being a K designation. If you read BMW ON like 3 months ago you would have seen that BMW is known for assigning project names/codes for no good reason other then to throw everyone else out of the loop off. Boxers are "R" bikes and inlines are "K"s. Plain and simple, they are not revolutionizing their model branding/numbering. The new GS simply had a covert K25GS project code name.

Bobby, you did not get it...of course will the new S be no K the K only stands for Konzept.
So it will still be a boxer. My credentials?I don't have any but you have an advantage if you speak or in this case can read german..."My" information comes from MOTORRAD (german motomag)... Chris |

Here are some pictures of the new GS. The new Paralever can be seen, where the reaction arm is on top for more ground clearance.
Also the arm appears to be longer (and probably lighter because of a new aluminium conctruction). The gearbox is improved and should shift like butter for once. The new cilinder heads can be seen, which are smaller and probably have a new combustion chamber with new valve angles. BMW already said in a magazine that when using current new materials regarding valve springs higher rpm's could be optained. And I think the new S gets an exciting, almost japanese like, frame...we have to wait First the GS, than the S hopefully... Hugo van Waaijen

How about it Bobby? Can you speak or "read" German? Surely Germans wouldn't lie! We will never invade Czechoslovakia!

All will be revealed on Tuesday
BMW have scheduled a press conference on Tuesday 16th Sept in Milan.
This seems in contradiction with their previous statements that they would NOT be making any announcement at Milan but would be waiting for year end. |
