Not that I have my digital camera working again here are some pics of a couple painted sidebag mounts.

Can we get a shot that is farther back from the bike? Those look pretty good, IMO...do they get marred when the bags are used? (I know next to nothing about the bag mounts...)

best,

Dave

Looks really good Bobby. Is it easy to color match the bag mounts. I would like to paint mine also I have a 02 SBX. Do you have to buy the paint from BMW or is there a brand / color code that can used by a hardware store? Thanks in advance.

Same question here. Playing with plastics a lot, and a reasonable amount of hobbyist painting, I can't see paint adhering to those mounts, regardless of surface treatment. Still, it looks very nice, and I'd love to hear how it was done. Makes me want to experiment a bit.
Personally, I took the opposite approach, and matched my bodywork to the bagmounts, tires, handgrips, plugwires, marker pods

curiously yours
roger

Will have to ask the guy who painted the last set for me. It was my understanding that its no different then painting a plastic bumper cover or body panel. The biggest hurdle is having sun dried bag mounts that have exhaled all of the mold release agent present in the plastic. Both of these bag mounts were used mounts with plenty of sun fading. I have seen brand new mounts painted and there is nothing you can do to make them hold up. I applied 3M tank protector material to the bag mounts where the bags make contact. After 12k I had to replace the protective material, so it classifies as low maintenance.

Painting the bag mounts or any other plastic is not a big deal, no different then painting the bag covers which is done all the time. I always prime with an epoxy primer after cleaning & scuffing. Any of the factory colors can be bought from Holt BMW in Ohio in quanities as small as .5 pint. I like the look & will shoot the mounts on my wife's 03 Prep over the winter.

the tail bag is a Wunderlich and is virtically expandable. It takes the place of the rear seat cowl. I usually have them in stock. I cant recall the price at the moment. It works GREAT!!!!

Sure painting is no different. I just don't see it holding up well where the bags and latches rub/grip. Stone chips not withstanding, most auto plastics don't have to endure that sort of abuse. Have you noticed how much the mounts flex when the bags are loaded? That's probably ok given what airdams and nose pieces on cars go through, but the latching concerns me.

Bobby, an more info or pics or pricing on that tailbag? I like that piece a lot.

regards
roger

and as for the painted mounts holding up, I have had them on for over 12 k now and there isnt so much as a chip or crack in them. I applied the 3M tank protector material where the bags make contact with the mounts and all is well. I have just reapplied the material for the first time and hope to get another 12k out of it.

Hi Bobby,

thanks for the feedback on both the tail bag and bag mounts.
The mounts sure like nice that way. The stockers have never bugged me on my black bike, but I'd be tempted if I had another color. Yours look great.
