UPDATE: Another Rear End Bites the Dust
Well, you can add mine to the list of rear end failures
![]() 2002 Prep with only 10,000 miles on it. You grab the rear tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and guess what it moves and you hear a "clunk" Goes into the shop today for the rear end and warped front rotors. I have had 7 BMW's and it just seems that the newer ones certainly have more problems then the older ones I have had. Sorry, I just had to vent. Jon Last edited by Olaf; 09-25-2003 at 10:53 AM.. |

Sorry to hear it Jon,
Post back when you get a chance and let us know if the play was in the rear drive carrier bearing or the rear pivot. Seems that both happen, with the pivot being a moderately more frequent reason (maybe 2:1?) good luck roger

Well, it ended up being the pivot bearing. It is already replaced.
Still waiting on if BMW is going to cover the rotors. the RHS is 2.5 times more warped then the LHS. Did not get the exact figures. Ragards, Jon

I spoke with some riders to did Deals Gap evening last and they mentioned several "K" bikes with rear end failures afterward. I cannot confirm this as truth or rumor however. Perhaps the later model BMWs cannot handle the more aggressive rides. Or maybe they are just being pushed harder that BMWs have traditionally been ridden.
No expert here, but would be interested in other's view.

My view - unexceptable! Hopefully BMW will cover both the rear and brake issues. One would only hope.....

The KLT's have a high rear end failure. The KRS's have very little. The overloading of the LT is the problem.

The Rear End will be covered. If the rear end has already had issues at 10,000 miles I have a feeling this will not be the last one:-(
I feel the rotors should also but we will see. I know some others have been and I plan on doing my best to get them covered. Jon

Just got a call from my dealer and BMW is also going to cover the warped rotor. It was the right one they said.
So they are going to put a new RHS rotor on. I have 10,000 miles on the LHS! Am I going to run into any problem with having 1 Rotor with 10,000 miles on it and the other one brand new? Thanks, Jon

That should offer no problem.

The early Ks have a very high rear end failure rate. So high that it has spawned several law suits. BMW failed to make good on a known defect.
I have over 42K on my rotors and still straight! It is odd that yours failed so quickly! ![]() |

Raven,
I also am very surprised that they warped so early. At least BMW replaced one of them. I went out and rode it Sat. and it is night and day difference , but the LHS is also a litle warped but not really anoying yet. Jon

I read this thread and just checked mine and there is side to side slop when grabbing the wheel at 3 & 9 oclock. There was none just a few weeks ago.
Mine is at 14K miles; does anyone venture what repairs cost? Thanks
