False Neutral

Has anyone experienced with false neutral issue? My 2004 R1100S sometimes has the false neutral issue especially during stop and go traffic. The green neutral indicator is on but if I release the clutch, the bike tries to move forward and stalls (because I pull the front brake). It doesn't happen when the engine is cold. I use Mobil 1 synth for tranny. The bike just got 6000mile service including dyno oil change.

Same same, but different

I've never experienced that... however, I'm finding a lot of false neutrals between higher gears. I've put around 1300 miles on the S since I bought it last month, mostly highway. What bothers me more than that is true neutral sometimes catches me while upshifting from first. My confidence in pulling out of corners at traffic lights, just for starters, takes a hit as a result--having to be conscious of really yanking the shift lever up & even then not grabbing second. It's something I'm going to mention for my 6k service. I'm just hoping I wasn't "spoiled" riding Japanese trannys all these years...

Apply a bit of pressure to the shift lever before shifting, just to take the "slop" out.

jam your foot in there and make the shift. i blow it from time to time, but never get myself in a spot that it could hurt. does it a tad more when cold or i am not giving it my all to shift. boots make a difference too. some make it worse, others make it great.

Yup, that's happened to me. Actually the neutral light was on, and I went to start the bike and it rolled forward by the starter motor, and I caught it just enough so that it didn't SLAM the pavement but just kissed it. Ugh. I never trust the neutral light anymore!

Yep, just have to be more forceful in your shifting. BMW's are no place for Michael Flatley

Agree with all the above responces and to just add one more. Having owned 3 new bmw`s, the trans. got better at about 10k plus. I`m right at 14,000 on my 2005 bc and it is silky smooth and I would get a false neutral between 4 & 5 sometimes but not anymore and my gs was the same way.

also, they shift better and feel better and are less noisy with silkolene straight weight gear oil. switched back to bmw's synth 75w125 and its crap...clunky and sticky. will be switching back to silkolene sooner rather than later. have even run mobil1 gear oil...and vavloline...silk's betta...like butta.

repoe3,

Are you talking about Silcone BOA 80W-90? I checked their site but couldn't find signle weight unless you are talking about Synthetic gear oil which has no weight info.

the gear oil is one weight, as spec'd in the manual...instead of a lighter weight oil mixed with polymers, etc...

same thing goes for engine oil...
20W50 is 20 weight oil with polymers and such to make it act like a 50 weight at higher temps.

75W125 is the same premise.

90W would be 90 weight oil with all the characteristics, cold or hot.

also, when i drained the gear oil out of the rear drive, the silk mind you, it looked brand new. i can see why the new models are saying they are lifetime gear oil rear drives. the tranny def. needs to be changed from time to time.

I'm sure John Deere would look poorly on being associated with that tranny. They happen to make better stuff than that (but BMW also claims to be the best, so it's just advertising vaporware).

The first S I rode 'falsed' between 5th & 6th, mine not so much.
I've got more hours on a Deere than BMW, no falsing on the Waterloo bunch.
Only look at the neutral light ocassionaly to see if it's burned out. English bikes will teach you not to trust that.
Should you wish to experence false neutrals come ride my Guzzi (won't take too long to get it running).
