It's was most likely named "Power Filter" by a marketing person.

The filter does flow quite a bit more than the stock filter or the stock filter K&N replacement. I got to play with all three filters on Chris' flow bench and there is a difference. The "PF" will flow about 20% more than the stock filter or the K&N direct replacment when installed. That does not mean you are going to get 20% more power though as there there are many other factors at work, cams, exhaust, duct used, etc..... that also limit flow.

I can tell you that the "PF" has roughly 4 times the filter area of the stock filter and the K&N direct replacement has a roughly 80% the filter area of the stock one on account of the extra seal area that cuts into the filter element area. I measured the filters myself in an anal retentive quest for the truth...

This is interesting the higher flow makes it sound O.K. provided that is meet with same particle size filtration. I believe the standard K& N to we worse than the standard Filter, do own one and have gone back to standard. The filter area really is very large on the standard filter allowing for the paper area if you were to unfold it ^^^^^^^ ie: lay it flat however the intake area is restrictive. If I can find the power filter in Australia I might give it a Go, is it a Standard K&N product ? If it is I sound be able to order from dealer .

NO. The stock area is quite small, if compared to filters on similarly configured engines - which is the only meaningful comparison.

The stock-size K&N seems pretty useless to me, other than maybe for K&N's marketing department. Similar flow (less area but lower restriction) and worse particulate performance. The only real user-side benefit is lower cost. Otoh, you'll probably need a valve job 10% sooner, so even that is questionable.

Bails,

I couldn't find the SJ Power Filter in Australia and I ordered direct from San Jose BMW (US$169 + Shipping of US$50, item was on back order for a few weeks). SJ BMW sourced a manufacturer for the holder, but the K&N filter is a standard car part, but K&N do not produce the whole assembly.

Without Lennie's InDuct I don't think you would see a huge gain in airflow.

The old bike did spin up quicker with all the mods I had on it (Staintunes, FIM 851 chip, InDuct and SJ Powerfilter), just waiting for a FIM chip for the twin spark and then I will start re-fitting the mods.

Tom.

I have all that and sprockets, so the filter would be OK, but I don't like the prices ?

Agreed but still large compared to the K & N standard ! Can you by the parts separately for the filter, I mean I could buy the filter in Aus and the other bits from the states !

Another issue, What oil do you use for the K & N I have heard of a lot of different types , some much thinner than the K & N stuff .

Good question on the separate parts purchase. I doubt it's worth SJBMW's time to do it separately (or possibly yours to find/crossreference the right unit to fit) but you could always inquire.

I just use the K&N oil. I've used others in a pinch. Wouldn't recommend anything lighter, but that's just my subjective opinion.
