Snow
I rode the bike to work today.
It's snowing outside. The snow is sticking. I think I am screwed.

of course, what Olaf neglected to include in his comment was "it will stop.... sliding when it hits the bridge abutment before it goes tumbling into the ravine". i worry less about stopping in slippery conditions than i do about staying upright. if you get any real accumulation, i'd look for alternate means home. you might make it home on the bike just fine. but what about if you don't? is that a risk/cost you are willing to accept?? my bike is, reluctantly, asleep for the duration.

even if it sticks, it is when/if the temps drop significantly that you may encounter ice. had to let my father take my care for several months way back when i had my first S and had nothing else to drive. ended up riding in the snow, no big deal.

Snow & Ice...
I remember the very first ride on my new S back in January 2000. The very first I think. Rode from Golden CO up Golden Gate Canyon then North toward Estes Park. Somewhere between Rollinsville and Nederland the temperature dropped and major gray skies and snow moved in. The road iced up and was covering with snow fast. Suddenly, even those dips in the road you don't normally notice were huge ravines. Ended up going about 10 mph (or less) till I finally got out of there and halfway back down Boulder Canyon where it was sunny and warm again. Thought for sure I was going to wreck my new baby and myself. Don't ride in snow if I can help it.

Snow and Motorcycles generally don't get along. My DRZ is quite a bit of fun in the snow but dumping the DRZ is expected, dumping the S is unacceptable.
Looks like they may get the roads clear for my trip home which is 35 miles, all interstate. It was a quick snow, tomorrow we get a couple of inches, I'll be in the Hitler-wagon (VW)

War Story: The first day I rode my Brand Spanking New R1100R home from the dealership, I of course took it out for a bit of a ride despite the cold rain. While approaching a stop sign at about 50 MPH, I downshifted and started braking. The road I was on was covered in tar which is slick anyway and very slick when wet. The downshift immediately started my rear tire in a slide. The engine braking was enough to lock the rear wheel, I stopped braking the front (no abs) so I would not lock the front as well. The rear slid from one side of the road to the next as I steered to keep the bike in a generally straight line. I ended up shooting through the stop sign at about 20 MPH thanking God that no-one was coming. I was very lucky not to dump the bike considering I only had 7000 miles of riding experience at the time. Right then and there I decided my next bike was going to have ABS.
I have never ridden that road since.

My last ride to work was week before last, since then there's been too much ice on the roads in our subdivision to get out on two wheels....solid snowpack and ice across the entire road surface
![]() Just as well, it was 14F that morning that I DID ride... Yesterday on the drive down it was pretty clear....roads mostly dry....and minus 6F. ![]() I'm hoping this weekend will cooperate. |
