OT: Meriden Triumph info request
Hi all,
Anyone that can recommend any good vintage Triumph resources. i.e. websites or mailing lists, or particularly decent books? The only guy that worked on them locally has quit, and I've been getting more and more calls to take them on. I've picked up a couple Hayne's / Cylmers, but any info would be great. Especially overview of the line (60-80's models) and any owner or mechanic's faqs. I was wanting to get one of my own first to experiment (and actively looking for one now in fact) but too many calls are going to force me to work on them sooner rather than later. Any tips appreciated. An unsolicited '73 500 Daytona showed up yesterday, so I've got to get on this. later roger

Hey Roger, glad to respond to this one as I'm in the process of restoring a 77 Bonneville at this time. From my experience the part supply for these gets better all the time, much better than when the bikes were in production. I have used a company in Michigan, "British Only" with good results. If you give them the specifics of your bike they will sell you a book specific to the model, which looks like factory exploded drawings to me. Parts are plentiful and fairly cheap but alas the quality is not up to BMW standards, never was. It's a fairly simple and surprisingly well-engineered machine (by 1960's standards). Also check out Walneck's magazine for other suppliers. There is a somewhat more specific repair book but I can't remember the title, I'll get it from home later. E-mail if you want.

Should be a ton o' resources.
Many Brit owners in the L.A., CA area. Chec for the owners group There is a Triumph books and parts place in Burbank, CA. Maybe I can check it out for you. There was an article in either Cycle World or Motorcyclist about 2 months ago about an old collector, I believe in Portland, OR, who has litteraly storage containers of new parts and mass quantities of vintage Brit parts. He was selling it out to a new outfit. I would research that for sure. These guys have an all Brit bike ride each year: http://bsaoc.50megs.com/ And then there's: http://www.vtr.org/ Oh heck, just use the inner'net Rog... ![]()

Roger, Try Big "D" Cycle in Dallas Texas, they are big into Triumphs or they were and I am sure they still are. A good friend of mine bought parts from them retoring his Bonneville They raced Triumphs in Dirt Track, Bonneville Salt Flats and Road racing. They had a rider who I think could have been the best in the world but died in a unfortunate crash at Daytona in 1971. His name was Rusty Bradley. I met and rode against him at Willow Springs and he cleaned everyones clock.
I know Big D does a lot of restoration. Give them a call. |

Roger,
You hang out with enough Roadrunners to know most of this already, but here are some of my favorite Brit Bike sites. Stop in for a BMOA meeting sometime and I'll introduce you to the wealth of knowledge. Also, check out the links on the club site. By the way, Hopper is a BMOA'er. -Jeff http://www.bmoaonline.com/ http://www.britishonly.com http://www.britishspares.com/ http://www.buchananspokes.com/ http://www.britishcyclesupply.com/ http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/ http://users.rcn.com/cstringe/brit.html http://www.morgo.co.uk/ http://britbike.com/

Oh, and the above parts houses will have manuals, but don't forget the usual suspects of moto-books (e.g., whitehorse press).

One more, and probably the most well known:
http://www.domiracer.com Their on-line presence is negligible, but they have a MASSIVE catalog. You also might want to check out SRM engineering.

Roger- If you want a good Triumph parts source get set up with Coventry Spares in Boston. It's run by John Healy who runs the TIOC or at least use to. The are a distributor of british bike parts(primarily Triumph) & Boyer ignitions & only deal with shops. They like you to have part numbers when ordering but their prices can't be beat.

Roger, a book I would recommend is "Modern Motorcycle Mechanics" by J B Nicholson. I covers most motorcycle servicing (no BMW) from early to mid-seventies. Good sections on British machines. A nice reference book to have.
